What is "Connection Logging Enabled" and should I care?

I have been having problems with my Apple Mail with it taking me Offline. To correct things I have used Onxy and run the tasks under Maintenance - Rebuilding: Cleaning: Misc Options. However, that's a bit of a pain and I'd just as soon find a better fix.

Note: My wife uses Apple Mail on the same computer, but in her own account, and she has no issues with it.

This morning I started with Offline and loaded up Onyx. I was about to run it when I got the 'ding' signaling incoming mail and, sure enough, I was back online. However, I also have new information at the top of Mail. Now, in addition to the number of messages and the number of unread, it says "Connection Logging Enabled". What and why is that?

I did a search in Mail Help for "connection logging" and one of the articles that appeared was "Use Connection Doctor in Mail on Mac", which apparently will help you to diagnose connection issues. Take a look at that article and see if it helps.

Thanks for that, Jon. I found it here and it should be helpful in diagnosing the issue next time it pops up. Right now, I’m back to being connected but I ran the test anyway, and was puzzled that my email shows up as two kinds of account. I got:

Telus IMAP Connection and login to server succeeded

telus SMTP Connection and login to server succeeded

They're the same account: IMAP (and POP) deal with incoming mail; SMTP deals with outgoing mail.

When I look in Keychain Access I see a password for each one for each of my mail accounts.

Got it, thanks. Quick, possibly dumb, question: Is there even a remote possibility of Mail caring that, with IMAP, the ISP's name (Telus) is capitalized but in SMTP it is all lower case?

Nary a clue as respects IMAP.

But if what you're seeing is similar to the Mail > Prefs > Accounts > Server Settings > Host Name(s) that I see with POP, they look like Internet addresses, in which case I'll guess that they're not case sensitive.

When I originally set up my POP account with RoadRunner, I was told that the correct setting was pop, but that didn't work. Apparently, the tech support person didn't know that it was case sensitive. When I changed it to POP, all was well. (Same for SMTP.)

Just to make sure that we're all on the same page.

That's interesting. Verizon must have a different setup than RoadRunner. At the time that I set up my account, Time Warner was the company that owned RoadRunner. Now, it's Spectrum and I don't know if that makes any difference. At any rate, my original settings were definitely case sensitive.

That makes them the only case sensitive URLs I've ever run across, assuming, that is, that they are URLs.

They aren't URLs. The incoming setting for me is POP-server.hvc.rr.com and the outgoing setting is SMPT-server.hvc.rr.com. I had originally used those settings but, for reasons which I have forgotten, had to speak with Time Warner tech support several years ago. The rep told me that I needed to change upper case to lower. When I did that, the connection failed. I changed it back to upper case and it has worked ever since.

On that page we are almost identical with cases, the exception being:

Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)

Account: Verizon

….whereas I am lower case

Account: telus

Pasting your POP "non-URL" into a Safari address bar gets me to a Spectrum "Log in to Webmail" page.

Pasting the SMTP "non-URL" returns "Safari Can't Find the Server."

I never tried that! Thanks for the info.

My recollection is that my settings were supplied by my ISP when I set up Mail.

I think I had tp play around with port numbers, but that's it.

I've been meaning to ask if you've raised this issue because of a problem or just out of curiosity?

An issue. "I have been having problems with my Apple Mail with it taking me Offline. To correct things I have used Onxy and run the tasks under Maintenance - Rebuilding: Cleaning: Misc Options. However, that's a bit of a pain and I'd just as soon find a better fix."

I also experience other issues like Mail not wanting to file...which is solved by running Cocktail and rebuilding Launch Services. However my wife, whose account is on the same computer, does not experience the same problems.

Oops! I forgot what his thread was about. blush

I doubt that your settings are involved if you're taken offline only intermittently. That sounds more like an ISP issue, although why it should affect only you is curious, but not as curious as the filing problem, which does seem to be Mail related, affecting only you.

Have you tried a deeep cache cleaning? It may be worth your while to boot into safe mode and let the OS do its thing.
