OS 10.6.8 Safari 5.1.10 I would like to know how to enable flash for a specific web site. I googled it, but the window after safari>prefs>security>manage website settings, produces a different window to mine. The window in question allows you to block whatever website you wish which in my case would be adobe. I play Bridge on Line and flash is a prerequisite. Can anyone explain how (if possible) to limit that condition to that bridge site or, change the prerequisite itself? jaybass

Try Click to Flash. You can set individual sites to accept Flash or not.

Or you can do what I did, which is to leave it in what I believe is the Click to Flash default setting - no flash site works unless you make the choice to use Flash.

When I come to a site that wants Flash I see a window displaying the word Flash. If I choose to watch, I click on the window and Flash is enabled. Otherwise I simply move on.

The default doesn't seem to work in Safari 10.0.1 but I recall that it does work in Safari 5.1.10.

….and 6.2.8 which appears to be as high as I can go with Mountain Lion.

Dare I suggest switching to Firefox, which seems to be far more malleable than Safari (and that was true all the way back to Netscape) and user-responsive updates/upgrades occur on a far more frequent basis than Apple supplies for Safari.
Just a thought.

From your description, I don't really understand what your problem is.

You can suggest it, but the suggestion would fall on deaf ears.

I've always used Safari and it has always met my needs quite adequately. I could have a new version (if I actually wanted one) by choosing to move to a higher OS. I don't as there are too many other applications that will no longer work.

And, for my needs FireFox, would not be an improvement. Quite a while ago they sent a message to the effect: ""Your Firefox is now out of date….the latest version is not supported on your system." Since then I know I've had a couple of OS Mountain Lion updates and the Safari update to 6.2.8.

My statement to Jon about 6.2.8 wasn't a complaint. I was just presenting a fact about the functionality of Click to Flash being on a Safari version slightly higher than he thought.

Just FYI: One can choose (as I did) to install Mozilla's Firefox ESR [Extended Support Release] for the time being. In not-too-distant future it too will no longer be supported, at which point decisions will have to be made.

Based on that, I don't see any point to your running Firefox ESR.

Please explain what benefit you derive from it.

The latest versions of Firefox are not (or will not be) supported by Firefox under Mac OS X Lion. That's why I switched over — so that I can stretch out the time that Firefox security and support will apply to Lion.

Firefox 49 requires Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) or higher. If using an earlier version of Mac OS X, there are options to continue using a secure version of Firefox.

Option 1: Upgrade to an OS X version supported by Apple
In order to continue browsing safely, Mozilla recommends upgrading to an OS X version that Apple supports. While Firefox will still continue to work on unsupported versions, using Firefox on a supported version will provide the best and safest user experience.

Option 2: Download Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR)
Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR) version 45 will continue to receive updates on OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 until 2017. Version 45 is the last ESR version to receive updates. In 2017, ESR 45 will no longer be supported. See the Firefox ESR page to download Firefox ESR.
