Yesterday Safari started acting strangely. Most websites I go to would not fully load. Looking at the status bar showed that all but the last 1 or 2 pages would load and then it just keeps trying until it gets timed out.

I trashed Safari and downloaded another copy but that did not help.

I'm using OSX 10.6.8 and this is the first time anything like this has occurred.

Did the websites load ok in another browser?

1. Does this happen with all websites or only certain ones? If the latter, post link(s) so that we can confirm it.

2. Have you tried Safari while logged into a test account?

3. If you have a cable modem, have you tried resetting the modem? In my case, that has worked to cure strange situations but it has to be done while the computer is shut down.

First, thanks for all the assistance. Prior to posting I had already deleted Safari cache and history. I also reset my modem again, this time with the computer off. The problem continued. It was random, sometimes a website would hang or not load and the next time it was fine. I also repaired Permissions but the only repairs were to the java stuff which is normal.

After the modem reset and booted my computer the problem continued. I noticed that my Trash was not working, kept getting 'this file will be deleted immediately' when putting stuff in the trash. Tried to fix that issue but couldn't figure out what I did to fix it a long time ago and thought what the hell I'll just reboot again. After rebooting again, the Trash worked fine and Safari hanging and not loading randomly vanished as well.

Everything is operating normally now. Must have been some gremlins in my system.

It wouldn't hurt to use Disk Utility's Verify Disk feature to see if you have any directory issues (or boot from the 10.6 disk and run Repair Disk). A third party utility (Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro, Drive Genius) would be even better, if you have one.

Is have TechTool Pro and will be running that this weekend.

Just be certain your version of TechTool Pro is compatible with OS X 10.6. Out of data versions of almost any utility have the potential to do more harm than good.
