Safari opens PFD files just fine. However I've started using the US Postal Service website to print mailing labels. In order to print the labels it requires that the PDF open in Adobe Reader to print them.

Is there a way to force Safari to use Adobe Reader to open PDF files on a per use basis?

I am not sure about "per use basis" but it is relatively easy to make Safari open a pdf through Reader. I personally have a lot of trouble doing this because some versions of Safari or Reader do not talk well to each other and it may hang on a loop trying to load a pdf) but here is the deal. Open Reader, go to preferences>Internet and tick on a box saying "display pdf in browser using" and find the Reader in the menu. Close Reader and launch Safari. It will now try to display a pdf file in the browser window through Reader. No guarantee; alas, the PC works flawlessly in this domain but not Mac. To get "per use" you could go back to the reader prefs and uncheck the box. I would also experiment with PDF Browser Plugin that can do the same but way more reliably. It is less sophisticated than Reader but maybe you would like it.

To toggle temporarily when clicking on a pdf link, hold down the option key to force a download of the pdf file. Then you can manually open it with Adobe Reader.

Frankly I don't have any issues with the current version of the Adobe Reader plugin. It doesn't take forever to open on first launch anymore and is more compatible with all pdfs than Preview is.

Thanks Kevin, holding down the option key and clicking on Print forces the USPS site to download the pdf and open it in Preview which is fine.
