Is there a way to have mail start up automatically after turning on computer?

Have you tried adding Mail to Login Items (System Prefs/System > Accounts > Login Items tab)?

Thanks. I just tried it and it isn't one of the options in that list. Is there a way to add things to the list besides just checking the boxes of what's already there?

that's not a list of options, the check boxes are under the "hide on launch" option for each item in the list.

With that window open, open a finder window and navigate to the Applications folder. Drag the mail application and drop it into the list to add it to the list.

The items in your "list" are there either because you "told" apps to add them or because of OS X necessity (e.g. iTunesHelper).

Rita may have simply installed an application whose normal functioning requires that it always be running. In that case, she wouldn't necessarily be aware that the application had added itself to her Login Items. (Though I suspect a "polite" application would notify the user that, once installed, it would launch upon login, I don't think there's any reason it would have to.)

That's just what I said...e.g. iTunesHelper.

I've got any number of Login Items that are on the list because the apps that installed them can't run without them, but I like to keep track of precisely what is there and to ensure that no app has taken it upon itself to insert itself.

Here's a quicker way to add and remove apps now that you know where the login items is. Just right-click on the dock icon of an App and select "Open at Login".
