Actually, despite its brevity, Hal's post is correct, although he may have made a few assumptions based on your post, just as I will in this post.

First, the existence of an "intern" and a "network" presume some sort of institutional setting, and hence, the existence of a system administrator in charge of all things associated with the network. Contact that person to see what is required and allowed.

Second, if you are on a local/home network and you want to share, go to Preferences>Sharing and see what is available to you.

Third, if you are really saying you do NOT want the intern to have access and you're wondering if Windows PCs have mystical abilities different from the Mac in this area of concern, don't worry. Trust your intern and know s/he won't be snooping around your Mac.

Fourth, if "second" above is correct, what the PC machine will have to do to share with your Mac is unknown, at least to me.

Fifth, if none of this makes sense or you mean something else, post again.

when you say the intern is "on your network" I think we can assume you mean they are connected to your local network and are using file sharing (windows) to connect to sharepoints on your mac. they are probably connecting as guest though so they have limited read access to your shares and no write access. (except for drop boxes)

Please fill in the details you have been asked for and then perhaps tell us exactly what you are attempting to accomplish. For example where is your intern trying to save the files. Assuming these files are on your Mac, how is the intern logged onto the Mac? What are your settings in System Preferences > Sharing?

Yeah, Joe, she is logged in via sharing, SMB, windows checked.

Virtual, other interns on mac laptops have been able to read and write on the files, that's the whole point.

   2. is she logged onto your account on the Mac?
   3. Another user account on your Mac?
2. Are the files in question located in the
   1. /Users/Shared folder?
   2. /Users/youraccount/Public folder?
   3. /Users/youraccount/Public/Drop Box folder?
   4. another folder under /Users/youraccount?
   5. a folder in another user account?
   6. a folder on the drive root?
3. In System Preferences > Sharing when you select "File Sharing"
   1. Are there any "Shared Folders" listed?
   2. If so are any of these the folder where the files are located?
   3. Select that folder and look under the "Users" column to see what privileges are available to yourself, Staff, and Everyone. What are those privileges?

There are other possibilities but these will do for a starter. Please answer ALL the questions. They are important to determining the actual situation and devising a fix.

not sure how the interns I use are logged in. I give them the netgear password and they are in.
The folder is added by me with the + button in shared folders, file sharing area.
Sometimes I have this issue, and it usually is resolved by changing permissions, but this file was definitely a read/write.
She is first intern on windows. Luckily all previous interns have all had Macs thus far. I "assume" that could be it.
She's comes back in a week and then we'll test this on other files and report back. feel free to pipe in with any ideas.
