When trying to print a page from the internet, it opens in Preview as usual. However, there aren't any background colours or other background information.

For example, if I wished to print an FTM page, it would not have the greens or the lines, either vertically or horizontally.

Unfortunately, because I seldom print pages from the Internet, I can't connect the start of this problem with any particular event such as a system or printer software update.

OS 10.6.3, Canon Pixma IP 5000

My web pages don't open in Preview. But, my printer (Epson) software gives me the option to print backgrounds. I have to expand the printer dialog box by clicking the down-facing triangle to the right of the printer name (not the double triangle to its immediate right). That gives me a box to check if I want to print backgrounds.

I hope that this helps.

In the expanded print dialog window there's a popup mid right that lets you change print options by group. Layout, Color Matching, paper type, etc. You probably have that set to one of the other values such as Summary. The first option in the list is application-specific. Selecting Safari gives options for Print Backgrounds and Print Headers and Footers. Those sound like what you were looking for. Other applications will present other options when their option group is selected.

I'm fairly sure that popup defaults to whatever you last set it to view. Or is "Safari" not the top option in the popup?

If Ryck has those pages opening in Preview, there is no Safari popup menu and none of the other Preview popups has the option to print backgrounds, at least in my setup.

I'm not sure why mine does....seems to me that's the only way they've ever opened for printing. I don't recall ever having made a choice for Safari to print this way however, until now, it's always worked fine.

I do remember choosing Preview as the default application for opening PDFs on the net. I wonder if there's a connection?

I have two utility applications with the Canon. One is a Printer utility where I check options like the operational mode, ink level readings, maintenance, et cetera.

The other has a few functions such as selection of the particular Canon, picking a driver (mine is Canon PIXMA iP5000 - Gutenprint v5.2.3), pausing, deleting jobs and so on.

Neither has any option to set parameters like printing net page backgrounds.

I actually don't get that pop-up. However, if I use a function like Mail This Page, the email will contain the page in it's entirety. That would appear to isolate the problem to Preview....which is sort of like a Catch-22 because Preview doesn't seem to have printing options.

10.5.8

preview options:

[x] center image
( ) Scale to Fit [100%]
(x) Fill Entire Page

Images per page [1 ]
[ ] print 1 copies per page

Perhaps your preview is broken? or it changes depending on what you are previewing? these are the options I get for opening a tiff

I don't know if any of the following is relevant but so far, at least, nobody else has come up with an answer.

If you log into a test account, access a web page and then try to print, does the page open in the browser or in Preview? If the former, something may be amiss with a printer preference in your main account. As you probably know, the usual print dialog box has a PDF button that contains an option to open the page in Preview. Perhaps that has been activated on an automatic basis? I don't know how that could happen (there seems to be no Preview preference that sets this) so it's purely a guess.

A radical, shotgun approach would be to reset the printing system. I have done it myself and it only takes a few minutes. The downside is that you will lose any presets that you have created so you'll have to re-create them. I'm not recommending this as a first step, nor do I know that it will work but it's worth mentioning as an option. If you do it and it works, you'll never know the cause of the problem.

Well, um, er, actually someone did. It was you, in your first response.

I got so focussed on looking at the Canon software and looking for two kinds of triangle boxes that I missed the obvious. The first dialogue box that opens has the single triangle and, bingo, that's where the option to print backgrounds was found.

I guess it got toggled off in some update.

Man, is my face ever red. blush

You're not the first person to miss the obvious; I plead guilty to that as well. I'm happy that the solution was so simple. cool
