A poster at TechSurvivors just bought a CyberPower UPS. I don't know anything about this company although the buyer was pleased, even though he hasn't had it more than a short time. The TS thread can be viewed here.

Does anyone have experience with their products? Any thoughts, as opposed to APC?

I have have heard of Cyberpower before, but I have on direct experience with them. However, over the last 30 years or so I have vacillated between APC, Tripp-Lite, and Belkin Uninterruptible Power Supplies and replaced a few batteries as well. At the moment I have three Tripp-Lite OmniSmart, and one APC Back-UPS RS currently in service.

Recently, due to a major storm coupled with utility construction in the neighborhood, we have been hit with several brown-outs as well as some extensive complete power failures and accompanying surges. This experience has led me to be a big fan of the Tripp-Lite OmniSmart line. All of the units handled the blackouts well, but during the brown-outs the APC would immediately go into alarm and switch to battery power while the Tripp-Lite OmniSmart units soldiered along providing 120 volt output with as low as 90 volt input and never needing to draw on their batteries. There were even a couple of surges that caused the Mac mini server connected to the APC to reboot while the Mac minis attached to Tripp-Lite OmniSmart UPSs did not.

To me the proof is in the performance and the Tripp-Lite OmniSmarts really came through for me when the chips were down.

A review of surge protectors:

Interesting read, but as far as I can tell, none of the reviewed models had a battery backup. Surge protection is great, certainly, but any savvy computer user knows that a UPS is essential.

I have a CyberPower CP1000PFCLCD PFC Sinewave UPS 1000VA 600W PFC Compatible Mini-Tower. It has worked fine for quite a few years. I did have to replace the battery after a few years. It is plugged into a Zero Surge surge protector. Because of the nature of the Zero Surge they told me there is no issue with plugging it into it. I can't tell you how it compares as I don't have the technical expertise to analyze it, I can say it gets good ratings on Amazon and so far so good.

I'll go in with mark and say I'd never heard of the brand before but I came across one used that was being tossed and just needed a new battery. swapped the battery and it runs great. built well internally also. not as popular or big of a name brand (like the common APC for example) but seems to be just as reliable. For its age, it had a better display than the APCs of the same generation.
