OS 10.6.8 I have downloaded quite a lot of avi movies and they played fine. Now for some unknown reason, they appear as a sheet of paper with one corner turned down and they will not play. When I click one, QT comes up with a black screen and nothing happens. I'm having to convert them to MP4s and they play fine as VLCs. Something must have changed because it never used to happen before.
Every single avi is affected this way. Any ideas anyone?

The icon you described appears, sometimes at least, when a file does not have a suffix; have your AVIs maybe lost theirs?

I don't know if they lost their suffix or ever had one. I clicked a couple of AVIs and gave them an extension of .flc and tried to play them on QT and a window said I may need additional software to open it. I tried to play them on nice player but no. I tried DivX Plus player but it was greyed out. I'm wondering if I upgraded something that caused this change. I do have 2 partitions, one of which I havn't
backed up for awhile so I'll take look and see if there is a difference. I'll let you know if there is. Thanks for your reply

I booted up in partition 2 (still in leopard) and all my AVIs had the QT icon.
I restarted in snow leopard and they all reverted to back to the sheet with the corner turned down. Obviously, SL is the culprit but why? And has apple issued a remedy? I did click on a couple of AVIs and added the suffix .flc but they wouldn't play in QT or nice player. DivX plus player was greyed out. If you have any advice, please let me know.

I'm out of my regular territory here, but since I just (clean) reinstalled 10.6.8 I may have an insight...

Depending on what you've done, you've either got QuickTime 7 and 10, or just one of them; you may be missing the version you need.

I've got /Applications/Utilities/QuickTime Player 7.app, and I remember not opting for v 10.

Take a look and let us know what you've got.

Edit: If I remember correctly, 10 s/b in /Apps and 7 s/b in /Apps/Utils.

I didn't see it in utilities but I have QT 10 in system profiler.
Should I download QT 7 and then uninstall 10?

Hmmm... You can d/l QTP 7 here; I don't think you have to delete QTP 10, but I'm not certain.

You were right. It was QT 10 causing the problem. I downloaded QT 7 and trashed 10 now we are aokay. Thank you for your help.

You're very welcome; I'm pleased as punch to have actually been able to help with a video issue. (Luck of the draw, I guess, my just having reinstalled.)

This is some 'mustard after the meal', but there was no need to remove QT-X entirely. Once you install QT-7 (in Utilities rather than in Apps) you can change all desired file associations from QTX to QT7 via the Get info window. You'd need to do this for each file type separately. That way you can retain QTX with its capabilities not present in QT7 (like Screen Recording), just in case you ever need that.

Thanks for that; I didn't think removing QTP 10 was necessary, but I wasn't certain.

Edit: By the way, the QTP 7 d/l to which I linked installs in /Apps/Utils by default.

I couldn't download QT 7 as I don't have a SL disc of my own. I had to boot up from partition 2 again and burn QT 7.7 to a CD and then back to 6.8.
I then looked at an apple site which stipulates QT 7.7 for leopard and QT 7.6.6 for SL. So I dumped 7.7 and downloaded 7.6.6 which went into utilities like it should.
BTW, I backed up to partition 2 with super duper only because partition 1 was greyed out which has never happened before. I've had SS for about 3 years without any problem.
