I just got a nasty surprise with iOS 10.2 on my iPad. There doesn't appear to be a way to delete individual or groups of selected photos with ease.

With the old software I could just select the photo(s) and touch the Trashcan icon. However, in iOS 10.2 there isn't a Trashcan or, it appears, any other way to delete the photos with any facility.

Anyone know how delete photos in 10.2 ?

In another thread, joemikeb mentioned doing it easily through the cloud...not your preferred method of doing anything.

In other words, I should be looking for a way to go backwards to iOS 9. It seems, with this and that Home icon mentioned in another thread, Apple has decided everyone will be on iCloud whether or not they wish to be there.

Your suspicion about Apple's intentions being correct wouldn't surprise me in the least, but before reverting I'd wait for input from some iOS users.

So far, I found this site explaining how to go backwards and one of the first instructions was to find the an IPSW, which I found at this location . Thoughts or concerns anyone?

This is very bizarre behavior. I am holding an iPad running iOS 10.2. In Photos I tap open an album (from Album view). I tap "Select" (top right corner), check off one or more photos, the Trash Can is in the upper left-ish corner and I can tap it to delete the photos.

If I am in the view that shows all the albums I have, when I tap "Select" a red-circled minus sign appears on the albums I can delete (e.g., Camera Roll cannot be deleted), tap and they are gone. Maybe your install of 10.2 is corrupted??

On my iPhone and iPad it works essentially this way in all the views. You just have to touch the Select Button at the upper right corner of the screen, then tap on the desired images and touch the trash icon at the lower right of the screen.

If you are not seeing the Select Button or the Trash Icon try

1. restart your iPad (Press and hold Sleep/Wake button until the shut down slider appears then move the slider from left to right. Once the shut down is complete (this can take some time) press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
2. if 1 does not solve the problem try a hard reset. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button until the slider appears then keep holding until the screen goes blank and the Apple logo appears. On the iPhone 7 models instead of holding the Sleep/wake button and the Home button hold the Volume down button and sleep/wake button.
3. if the problem still exists
   1. back up your iPhone to iTunes on your Mac
   2. Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings
   3. Restore your phone from the backup.

Except that the Trash Can was on the right, that's exactly the way my iPad worked with iOS 9.3.5. However, with 10.2 the Trash Can is not available.


Or maybe it's because you have iCloud enabled and I do not. That's what I wonder.

After the Apple logo appeared, there was a brief period of black followed by the appearance of the password-entry window. I entered and the photo software was operating the same as before.


This didn't work either. I was expecting the white line to appear under the logo but nada. Again, I entered and the photo software was operating the same as before.

FYI, "operating as before" means I have the select function but only one option, to send the photos via email et cetera. But, no Trash Can in sight. So, I guess I'll be moving to option 3.

I continue wondering if it's because I have not enabled iCloud and this is Apple's way to force my hand.


EDIT: About the option 3 - doesn't that mean I'd just be putting 10.2 back onto the iPad as opposed to going back to 9.3.5 ?

"Physician, heal thyself" can now be "iPad, heal thyself".

Without any other prodding, my iPad now allows deleting photos. In the Camera Roll mode, if a picture is selected the menu bar comes up with a heart, a symbol for sending, a trash bin, some parallel lines with circles, and Details - all on the right.

Or, choosing Select and selecting a number of pictures generates a trash bin on the left side.

Given it's today, I'll assume Santa brought a solution. *<]:{)

What you are describing is exactly what I was describing in my post way up above. Glad it is now working for you, although it would be nice to know what made the difference this time around, ho-ho-ho not withstanding.
