I'm using Catalina 10.15.7 on a Mac Mini. Since the last security update I've been experiencing random freezes and restarts. The error report is below. Anyone have any ideas what is causing this?

I can't be any more specific other than it is I/O related and perhaps to a Thunderbolt device. I have two suggestions…

1. Run Etrecheck Pro and see what, if anything, it turns up.
2. As this has only occurred since the last update, I would try reinstalling 10.15.7.

Does this happen if you disconnect your peripheral devices from all ports?

I had the same problem (I don't remember which OS) and disconnecting my Thunderbolt device stopped the kernel panics.

I have NO thunderbolt devices on my computer. The only device I have is my Canon printer hooked via USB and I've had that for well over a year now.

Jon cited Thunderbolt only as an example. Any peripheral hooked up to any port could create an issue.

Your printer having been hooked up for well over a year is meaningless, because, as V1 used to say (more or less): "Everything works right up until the moment it stops working."

Unplugging your printer may do no more than eliminate a possibility, but it also maaay identify your problem.

OK, unplugged the printer USB cable and see if that does anything.

Do you have any antivirus software? A long time ago (and it may have been in Jaguar), I found that Norton Antivirus was causing kernel panics. Recently, I uninstalled AVG antivirus because of issues (not KPs, but unexpected crashes). Sometimes, AV software IS a virus.

No Antivirus software. I did download and run EtreCheck and it showed show much a couple of unsigned files that have been there are years and a couple of Launch Agents from long ago apps and I deleted those.

After connecting and disconnecting my canon printer, over the past several days, it seems that the kernel panics stop when my printer is disconnected. I have had this printer for almost 2 years now with no issue. How do I correct the kernel panic issues now that I think I have isolated the cause? Thank you.

In System Preferences>Printers and Scanners remove/delete your Canon printer, then add it back in. Use the +/- button under the sidebar list of printers to do this. This should force the installation of the latest and most compatible printer software for your model. See if this makes a difference.

One more thought: If the printer is connected to your computer by USB, try a different USB cable, also try a different USB port.

And another thought: Check the Canon website to see if there's an updated driver for your printer that you may need to download. It's what I need to do with my Canon.

The driver downloaded from Apple might not be the same as Canon's. I have had this issue with my Epson printer, so I make sure to download directly from Epson. The suggestion to try a different USB cable is a good one.

I didn't have kernel panics, but my Canon iP110 quit working and started throwing driver crash reports every time I attempted to print to it (IIRC it uses 32 bit code). I could not find a Canon driver either from Apple or Canon that was compatible with both my printer and Monterey, and I wound up replacing the iP110 with a Canon G3060 that is Apple-AirPrint enabled. FWIW the G3060 works flawlessly as both printer and scanner using Apple's wireless AirPrint interface and no drivers are needed for either printing or scanning. AirPrint appears to be the direction Canon is going for Apple compatibility with its new printers.

AirPrint is a good solve for Apple as well as for printer manufacturers struggling to keep up with Apple's rapidly evolving OS systems. Not so good for owners of pre-AirPrint printers.

I will delete the printer from System Preferences/Printer. I checked the Canon website and there are no drivers from the Canon TS 6220. If this doesn't work I will get a new USB cable although I have no idea how a cable laying on the carpet behind my desk can simple go bad.

I took a look at Canon's website, because it can be kinda obscure, and I found this Printer Firmware Updater (Mac) for TS6200 series Ver.1.0, dated 11-1-2021.

I dunno if it will help, but I guess it's worth a try.

There are also some optional software d/l's, but I've got no idea what any of them is about.

Other than obvious things such as being chewed on by the cat, getting sucked up into the vacuum cleaner, stepped on, your cable may be an active device with sensitive electronic components in the connector subject to damage from power surges, heat, and simple age. So a cable lying on the carpet behind your desk can simply go bad. But according to Canon when Catalina is selected as the OS…
It appears you are in the same situation I was in with my Pixma iP110, you need a new printer.

Wouldn't you take Canon's having issued a Catalina firmware update for Douglas's printer less than a month ago as implicitly, simply saying that no new driver is needed for Catalina?

The Canon printer is only 2 years old, still sold by Canon, and there was/is no driver available for any recent Mac OS when I bought it. According to Canon support they no longer have drivers for their printers.

Maybe the newer ones. They recently released a Monterey driver for my 8 year old imageCLASS LBP6000, which, by the way, has been discontinued.

I just realized your printer is Air-Print capable. Have you considered setting the printer up wirelessly following these instruction from Canon? That might solve any driver and or cable issues in a single stroke. I run my G3060 that way and it is fully functional as both printer and scanner.

I hesitate to declare success but I haven't had a kernel panic, 'restart'. since I deleted the printer in System Preference and re-added it yesterday. Interestingly, the first time I re-added the printer I did not have the 2 sided printing option so I deleted and re-added the printer again and 2 sided printing is back as an option.
