OS 10.12.6

I have quite a lot of items in my trash (not emptied) that I want to return to their original locations. I opened my trash can and go to file but there is no 'put back' option like there should be with Sierra. I tried the command+delete option but that doesn't work either. Now what?

WHAT WAS THE ISSUE YOU WERE ATTEMPTING TO SOLVE WHEN YOU MOVED ALL THE FILES TO THE TRASH? Has it been resolved? If not it may be better to solve that issue before restoring the files to their original location or restoring the files might be unnecessary?

However, the answer to your question is there has never been a put back option beginning with the initial Public beta and continuing through Catalina (MacOS 10.15). The only thing I can suggest is if you have a Time Machine backup restore your entire system back to a day and time before you moved all the files into trash. Cloning back from a clone created prior to moving the files to the trash would also work. Other than a backup you will simply have to decide where each file was and drag and drop them back into place.

NOTE: In Catalina there are features called snapshots that are part and parcel of Apple's new APFS file system that can almost instantly restore a system to a previous state. Just one more reason to upgrade if your Mac can handle it.

In Catalina (and I assume in previous OS incarnations), if you open Trash and Control-click the file, Put Back is an option.

Hah! Thanks for that, Jon.

I"ve always used command-Z, but I"m not sure if it works on multiple items that have been sitting a while. I"ll have to experiment.

I'm not arguing, but how do you get that to work? That option does not appear on my system. 🤷‍♂️

Simple control-click for me in 10.15.4, like so.

Command-Z has worked for me forever.

What I get
I guess I need to spend a few hours going through all the various options in System Preferences and see if there is something turned off or on that should be otherwise.

Got me beat!

Could it have something to do with how long your item has been sitting in the trash?

I empty my trash virtually immediately, so I've got no way to experiment...at the moment.

I'll try leaving something sitting around.

More: The option survived a restart and a shutdown.

Still more: Could it have something to do with one of the options under Finder Preferences > Advanced? (Mine)

And again: Does command-Z work for you?

To tip the scales, I too get "Put Back" with a Control-click on the item in Trash.

I don't think I ever set a preference one way or the other to make that happen. In fact, until this thread I don't think I recalled the ability to put back. smirk

Hmmm... I wonder if it has something to do with command-clicking on the Trash window itself rather than on a specific item in the Trash?

Using super duper, I did a back-up and now I am back to square one. I had to again install the Word up-date. Regarding "put back" under file, it is there but it is greyed out. I couldn't find a way to activate it.

Thank you for your considerable help Joe.

You could always try the old remedy, running the Combo 10.12.6 update on top of your current installation.

Sorry if this is a silly question, but was there anything IN the Trash when "Put Back" was grayed out?

Did you ever solve this?
