Somehow, in all the drive partitioning I've done recently, an old application (Bento) became the default app to open my Excel Files. I resolved that issue by using "Get Info" and resetting Excel as the default app. However, the icons are still Bento.

How do I change the icons back to Excel? (And, yes....once this is done I will be dumping Bento)

Additional Info: Concurrently, all my backup drives had the same problem - the default app to open was changed to Bento. As well, my main drive became quite slow (about 60% efficient according to Disk Warrior)

Current status is that I only have the main drive powered - all backups are either disconnected or powered down.

In a similar situation, my Time Machine icon became generic when I redid my TM drive. The solution was to do a Get Info on the TM drive. Both the generic and the TM icon appeared in the Get Info window. I dragged the TM icon onto the generic icon and that solved it.

I don't know if this applies to your situation, but it's worth a look.

Thanks, Jon. I've added a bit of additional info....all the drives were infected with the same wrong icon for the Excel files. Also, I'm not using Time Machine (as it wants a larger drive than I have available) so I'd be dragging a CCC drive with older data than the main drive.

If the CCC Excel has got the correct icon, do a Get Info, select the icon, and hit command-C.

Then do a Get Info on each file/folder with the Bento icon, select the icon, and hit command-V.

Nothing more than the old copy and paste.

That is an indiction that the Launch Services Database has become corrupted. I am sure there is a command line command for this but I have always used OnyX or TechTool Pro to do the job. It only takes several seconds and does not require a reboot.

That's one of the things that puzzles me. Every single CCC clone has the Bento icon substituted....and it happened post the last CCC backups. I did do one thing different with the last CCC backups, which was to put a recovery drive on each.

I have the latest Onyx (3.4.9) so I'll give that a shot. I assume it's just having Onyx run their various services.

You can use the icon from /Apps/Excel itself, or does it, too, have a Bento icon?

Thanks, but I went with the Onyx solution in case, as joemike suggested, there might be corruption of the Launch Services. Onyx did the trick and, since I had it open, I got it to run other services too. I also immediately re-did my CCC backups.

On reflection I think the cause may have been all the back and forth with partitioning and then undoing partitions. With the backups and my intended "32 bit drive" on separate drives, I figured it was goofy as hell to leave the main drive partitioned so I restored it to one partition.

It may have been all the back and forth with partitioning etc. but sometimes the Launch Services Database gets messed up without any apparent "help" at all. However, like many things that can go "bump" in the system, as OS X/macOS has matured it happens less and less often — but it still happens, albeit rarely.

👍 IMHO that was a good decision. Two or more APFS volumes on the same drive gets around the most egregious problems with partitioning and is acceptable, but partitioning is too restrictive and too inflexible.

BY-THE-WAY, I have two external HDs that I use for archival data storage that are formatted APFS with multiple volumes (so I can have a different encryption password for each volume) and those are working very well. APFS may not be the optimal format for rotating rust but any performance differences are unnoticeable.
