Apple's been working!

Not that it's critical for me, but my memory pressure, which has never been anything other than low, has gotten even lower; my green line is noticeably narrower than it was in 10.14.0.

Part of the difference is that the update to Safari 12.0.1 has reduced its memory requirements even more than the update to v 12 had already done. (Aside: I've got the same tabs open in both Safari and Firefox at the moment, and Safari is using 750MB RAM while Firefox is using 1.8GB.)

Nope. I'm happy (with Firefox) as a clam at high tide.
Now it's time for my slog (= slow jog).

And not unreasonably in this respect; my RAM observation is merely informational, because, as joemike has explained, as long as your memory pressure is in the green range, what's using how much is inconsequential.

Since updating, the system on my MacBook Air takes around 120 seconds to load. It used to take around 30 seconds with 10.14.0. I've looked at Login Items for anything that might be causing problems, deleted caches, run OnyX, but can't seem to speed things up.

FWIW, my time to restart remains pretty close to 30 seconds.....in my update process I HAD to download the disk image updater from Apple Support and apply the update using that since my normal process from Software Update got corrupted during the install process and wouldn't pass the last step of verification.

Maybe re-applying the update using the stand-alone updater will resolve your issue.

Perhaps you lost some of your caches and are still rebuilding since your manipulation using non-standard cleaning?

Not sure if the newest OS truly benefits from as much manual intervention as past OS's........it is quite a bit different under the hood.

You are not the first to report this and there have been articles written with suggestions. Apparently one common issue is out of date/incompatible extensions, drivers, etc that slow loading. You might try EtreCheck, it is very good at identifying those kinds of things.

Thank you for the EtreCheck steer. It identified a Dropbox file as unsigned, then I found Dropbox in the Login Items again and deleted it.

I am now back to a 30-second boot.

I just found the article I had been looking for with suggestions on speeding up Mojave if it is slowing your system down. If you haven't found it, OWC's Rocket yard blog is a good source of information about Apple technology and tips for use.

I updated to Mojave today. The update took about 1 hour 15 minutes and the important things seem to be working. Entourage 2008, my preferred email client, is fine (it's 32-bit). The one glitch that I noticed, so far, is that the update did not recognize Epson printer app. I located it in a clone and copied it to ~/Library/Printers. Printing now works. I don't know why it had disappeared from that location in Mojave.

Naturally, I backed up everything before updating (and a good thing, too).

ADDENDUM: I noticed that, when I quit an application that wasn't in the Dock, its icon remained in the Dock and I had to manually remove it. A quick look at the Dock pref pane revealed that "Show recent applications in Dock" was checked by default. I unchecked it and the issue was gone.

Do you have other 32 bit applications? If so, it'd be interesting to hear what they are and how they make out.

AFIK, I may have some 32-bit applications but I'm probably not using them. You can check on the ones that you have at https://roaringapps.com I'll post back if I come across anything. As always, I took the precaution of making several backups (i.e. 3 clones) before updating.

An easy way to identify the 32-bit apps on your computer is to open "About This Mac" (under the Apple menu), click on "System Report" and in the sidebar scroll down to Software and click on "Applications". The last column of the report is a yes/no status on all your applications as 64-bit.

This feature should be available on at least 10.12 and higher.

The issue isn't identifying which ones are 32 or 64 bit, it's wondering which ones will work on the next system upgrade. Many I can do without but I have a handful (e.g. Bento, Quicken, Graphic Converter, et cetera) that work just fine with High Sierra and which I would not like to replace.

I suppose the day will come when I'll be forced to adjust to less familiar software but I'd like to delay it as long as possible.

I was confident that Entourage 2008 would work in Mojave because Roaring Apps had a post that Office 2008 worked fine. Just prior to upgrading to Mojave, I updated my 3 clones with the High Sierra system, so I knew that I could easily revert if I felt it necessary.
