OS 10.12.6

Does anyone know how to remove duplicate files in 'all my files' other than manually?

Also, is it possible to change the dot tags to tags along the bottom of a file as in some previous OS's

Look at Duplicate File Finder Remover. I have not used it myself but it's worth considering. I can't answer the question about tags.

While at your desktop, hit command-J > Label Position: Bottom.

Hehe, I read that differently. wink Like pre-Mavericks Labels vs. current Tags.

I hit command-J > label Position: Bottom. The only change was that my files now

are located on the right side of my desktop. I did ask you before how to place them

anywhere and I have forgoten how I did it. Enlighten me again artie. Changing the

dots to labels at the bottom of the file/folder didn't work for me.

You can drag your files back to wherever you had them beforehand with no further ado as long as your pref remains Desktop > command-J > Sort by: > None.)

I now understand that you're trying to get your colored labels to look like this. (Thanks, Urquhart.)

I use a 3rd party app, XtraFinder, that requires jumping through a Recovery Partition/Terminal hoop or two, but the developer has provided pretty good instructions.

My link...not Urquhart's.

You need to click on the XtraFinder link, d/l the app, and follow the developer's installation instructions.

Once it's installed, you can set the colored tags pref from Finder > XtraFinder > Prefs.

If you're unsure about anything, post back.

artie,

I disabled SIP and downloaded XtraFinder .17.3 I then enabled SIP (sucessfully).

I couldn't download .27...something to do with OS sierra. But I understand to

update XtraFinder, I don't have to disable SIP again.

Problem now is that I have XtraFinder in my apps but I cannot open it.

BTW, it is installed. What now?

I don't understand why you'd have a problem with XF 0.27; I'm running it with no issues in 10.12.6...same version of macOS as you're running. XF has issues with High Sierra, but none of which I'm aware with Sierra.

I'm not even sure that legacy labels are included in 0.17.3. (Where on Earth did you find it? Is it the 10.6 version on the dev's website?)

At any rate, XF hasn't got a user interface, so to speak; it appears under Finder in your menu bar after it's been launched, so Finder > XF > Prefs > Appearance > Legacy label color painting is the option for which you're looking.

SIP wasn't introduced until after OS X 10.6, so if you're running the 10.6 version of XF you'll have to go the SIP route once more if you need to update to v 0.27.

I now have .27 XtraFinder. I Went to XtraFinder Prefs and ticked the 'Legacy label color painting' but it is not working. Do I have to do something else?

Since I started trying to download XtraFinder, my mouse has been frozen 4 times and a window appeared saying something about bluetooth which I have never used.

I had to shut down and restart to get back to normal.

If you do not use Bluetooth it can be turned off in System Preferences > Bluetooth.

Did you notice the "Enabled for desktop" check box? (The extraneous space is laziness on the dev's part; he occasionally deletes text but doesn't change his GUI to coincide.)

Also, I forgot to mention that although the colored dots appear immediately after you restart, the oblongs do not appear until you click on each item that's got a dot. (No need to do anything more...just click.)

I tried changing bluetooth to off and a window said I would control of my computer etc.

I typed in the necesary lines in terminal to find out if it were true but I'm still none the wiser.

From what I read in a forum, if you get a 0 that is false and a 1 is true.

I tried to turn bluetooth off in system prefs but that window kept appearing.

I have just ticked "Enabled for desktop" and rebooted.

Clicking on a folder with a dot and then clicking on it again doesn't do a thing. Can

you clarify that line? I'm almost there...I think.

I wonder if making Bluetooth inactive in System Prefs/Network, like this, would solve your problem?

More: I don't even see System Prefs > Bluetooth in my 10.12.6.

I have made bluetooth in active but in system prefs it will not allow me to switch it off.

Bluetooth is immediately to the right of network in S/Ps.

BTW, I have 68 items in my documents and most of them are empty!! Only since

downloading XtraFinder, what's going on? I did a back-up 2 days ago, that may be my

way out

Oops! I probably don't see a Bluetooth pref pane in System Prefs because I've deleted Bluetooth from /Apps/Utilities. Maybe deletion is your ultimate solution?

I'll guess that your oblongs didn't work after you restarted because you haven't added XtraFinder to your login items. I don't see a way to do it from within XF, so you'll have to use the + (plus) sign in System Prefs > Users & Groups > Login Items.

Your 68 empty documents are completely beyond my experience with XF; I can't imagine its having had anything to do with the deletion of your contents, but then again, I haven't got that great an imagination. (More: Maybe email the dev and ask if it's a know issue.)

I'm wondering how you made out, most importantly with your documents, but also with your oblong tags?
