I have previously run the latest combined update on various systems to refresh/fix minor niggles, but have hit a problem with 10.10.5.

I have previously run the 10.10.4 combined updater on a 10.10.4 volume with no issues. But, since running secupd2016-002yosemite on 10.10.5, I have been unable to run the 10.10.5 combined updater on the 10.10.5 volume. I even had to download a new file when a window told me that an older update disk image couldn't be verified.

I have various 10.10.5 partitions and the updater refuses to run on any of them, saying "This volume does not meet the requirements for this update."

I have had a couple other problems, which seemed to be font related: I couldn't change the startup disk, because "The bless tool was unable to set the current boot disk." And, when I held down the alt key to select the startup disk, two of the partitions (one 10.10.5, one 10.11.4) had three squares with question marks in them instead of the volume name.

I had removed Helvetica.dfont and HelveticaNeue.dfont from the system folder, choosing to make them active via Suitcase Fusion instead. All of the related clone partitions were correctly named. When I put the Helveticas back in the system folder, the problem disappeared.

It makes me wonder if being unable to run the combined updater is font related or if the installer is looking for something in the system that isn't there.

I've run Disk Repair and DiskWarrior on all volumes. I've reset the PRAM/NVRAM.

Any ideas? Thanks.

That sounds like the Combo problem disappeared?

Removing fonts from /System/Library/Fonts could, indeed, affect your ability to run system updates.

Edit: Actually, messing with anything in /System/Library has the potential to cause problems.

I've been making the System Folder "better" ever since OS 8.5. Can't help myself. The Helveticas are back, but I still can't run the combo updater, even one I downloaded today. The security update runs okay.

The fastest solution may well be to reinstall Yosemite. You may not be able to definitively diagnose the problem, but reinstalling will probably take a shorter time than troubleshooting.

I've successfully fought a strong urge to clean up /System/Library for years, but every time I fire up GrandPerspective I've got to do battle with it again.

Have you tried booting into safe mode to run the Combo?

Yes, I've tried running the updater in safe mode. No go.

I'm going to restore the complete original system fonts folder and see what happens. The next step will be to do as Jon suggests.

I will also read Kurt Lang's treatise on fonts another time. I've been following his advice for years on keeping system fonts to a minimum. However now, with the size of hard drives and speed of processor and 24 Gbs RAM, I suppose it's not as necessary as it was twenty years ago.

And since I've stopped work (especially DTP) I no longer really needed 2,500 fonts on tap. Creature of habit...

I've read some Lang's treatise, but I've always stopped short of trashing stuff that OS X brings along with it; there are all kinds of Asian fonts that I'd love to get rid of, but I don't want to find out what will break if I do (and they don't take up all that much space - relatively speaking - anyhow).

Back to your problem, though, I remember a similar problem with a much earlier incarnation of OS X, but damned if I can even begin to remember what the solution was... Anybody?

Curiouser and curiouser...

I've been pursuing this exercise. I say that because the Mac is working fine in every other regard. It just won't let me run the 10.10.5 combined updater.

The previously downloaded combined updaters for 10.6.8 and 10.11.4 will run on their respective partitions, even with modified system folders (fonts). I restored original fonts to my 10.10.5 partition and still the updater would not run. I downloaded a fresh combo updater to my MacBook and it, too, refused to run saying again, "This volume does not meet the requirements for this update."

I decided to bite the bullet and run the original Yosemite 10.10.0 system installer. But, the installer would not be verified, saying it was possibly corrupted and go to the App Store and download a new copy. I went to previous my purchases on the App Store. Every OS back to Lion was listed for download, but not Yosemite.

Apparently, Yosemite is unavailable on the Apple site.

I believe Apple really wants me to use El Capitan!

Can you boot into Recovery Mode and reinstall from there?

The only Recovery selection I am offered is for 10.11.3

Have you ever installed El Cap?

OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

Which version of OS X is installed by OS X Recovery?

•   If you use the Recovery System stored on your startup drive to reinstall OS X, it installs the most recent version of OS X previously installed on this computer.
•   If you use Internet Recovery to reinstall OS X, it installs the version of OS X that originally came with your computer. After installation is finished, use the Mac App Store to install related updates or later versions of OS X that you have previously purchased. (Emphasis added)

I ran into a similar problem with one of the Yosemite betas. It turned out if the drive was partitioned, Yosemite would only install and work correctly on the first partition.

AFIK any Mac that will run Yosemite will also run El Capitan, so it makes economic sense for Apple to move users to El Capitan.

My main OS is on a SSD mounted on a PCIe card and is the only partition. I have previously installed El Capitan on this drive and ended up cloning my old Yosemite OS back. So, yeah, that would explain the 10.11.3 Recovery drive.

As Adobe Illustrator CS5 is the only thing holding me back from moving to El Capitan, I can see a sheer rock face in my not too distant future.

I also have 10.6.8 on a SSD. The only reason I don't use that all the time is the outdated browsers.

I'll probably stick with Yosemite until it gives me grief (this problem is definitely not grief) then move to El Capitan.

Thanks, all, for your input.

You might take a long hard look at Affinity Photo as a replacement for Photoshop. It has some things missing but it is advancing rapidly.

Another possibility, and free, is to download Google Nik Collection. Apparently, Google is divesting itself of Nik and is making all those goodies available, gratis. I downloaded it recently but haven't yet used it.

Thanks, Jon, for the Nik steer. I've downloaded it and will see what the learning curve is like. Photoshop and InDesign (CS5) still work perfectly well in El Capitan, though.

There is a problem in Photoshop CS5 and both Yosemite and El Cap: If you try to use the eyedropper to select a color for the Color Gradient tool and you click off the image, Photoshop crashes instantly. I've encountered this problem and a lot of other folks have as well. There appears to be no workaround other than to upgrade to CS6 or later. frown

I've experienced this eyedropper crash with Illustrator in El Capitan, but not with Photoshop. I've just eyedroppered every which way in the gradient tool and can't crash Photoshop in Yosemite. ???
