I jut got my new Mini with Mavericks installed on it.

I just noticed that applications suck as Preview and Safari do not have the arrows at the top and bottom of the scroll bar like their was in my old Mini with Snow Leopard. Is this the new way? Is there a way to get them back?

Also I'm using a Logitech BlueTooth mouse and the wheel works opposite of the way it did in Snow Leopard. I used to turn the wheel toward me to move down the page now when I turn the wheel toward me I move up the page. Is this part of Mavericks of did I do something backwards?

Apple changed the way scrolling works in Mountain Lion, presumably to make the motion consistent with the way it works on iOS touch screens. They call this "natural" scrolling, and it's enabled by default. To disable it, go to System Preferences -> Mouse and uncheck Scroll direction: natural.

FWIW, it took me only a few days to become used to the new way; it's very intuitive, once you've unlearned a couple decades' worth of habit.

For the scroll arrow issue, try the General tab of Tinker Tool. You should be able to tweak the setting to your satisfaction.

I don't believe there are arrows to be tweaked, hidden or otherwise; they were done away with in Lion.

A perusal of TinkerTool 4: Details reveals that "Place both scroll arrow buttons of any scroll bar at both ends of the bar" is available for OS X 10.6, but not for 10.7 or 10.8.

John Siracusa brought his usual thorough analysis to the radical departure from Snow Leopard and earlier scrolling behavior represented by Lion (and later—some of these changes were subsequently refined) in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion: the Ars Technica review.

dkmarsh, that's an interesting article you linked too and I've bookmarked it to read.

It's interesting how technology passes you buy. I used to update my OS immediately but because I needed some old apps that used Rosetta I stuck with Snow Leopard until now. Boy how things have changed. I may need to buy a copy of Mavericks for Dummies.

There is also a System Preference in "General" to "Always show scroll bars", which should resolve your issue in other applications, as you commented in your original post.
