A few days ago my Mac started doing very strange things:

1) Would fall off the network. If I turned off Airport and turned it back on, it would either not turn on or tell me there is no Airport card installed.
2) Even if I connected an ethernet wire from the router, would still not pick up a network.
3) Screen locked up with screen saver up or in an application. Force quite window would not come up.
4) Fans were LOUD in the middle of the night when nothing was happening, didn't think of opening Activity Monitor.
5) Magic mouse cursor would move but it would not click, would not produce any action, but trackpad did.

Brought it to Apple Genius Bar last night. Did all the tests, zapped the PRAM, suspected it was a negotiation thing between the 16GB RAM I installed a month ago and the HD. The only test that came up bad at Apple was the RAM test, but they told me even tho OWC specs that this machine, the 7,1 can use 16GB, it is not recommended. Was working after the PRAM zap and I went home. Today, same problems. Get worse the longer the Mac is on. The night I noticed the fans were going, there was a lot of heat under the hinge, by the processor.

The link speed for the Serial-ATA is 3 GB and the negotiation is 3GB. Is this the problem?

ALSO, looking at Activity Monitor now, a file called clamd, which I guess is Clamx, is 277.9 MB even when sentry is off. I get this sampling:

Sampling process 153 for 3 seconds with 1 millisecond of run time between samples
Sampling completed, processing symbols...
Analysis of sampling clamd (pid 153) every 1 millisecond

Back in mid 2010 when your Powerbook was designed and tested the largest capacity 204 pin PC3-8500 SO-DIMMs available only had 4GB of RAM, thus Apple's recommendation of a maximum of 8GB. AFIK Apple never revisits those recommendations when newer larger capacity DIMMs are released, so the recommendation never changes. Apple's rationale is they do not want to recommend anything they have not thoroughly tested and they don't want to spend the money to go back and re-test every time a new higher capacity DIMM is released. In point of fact there are a whole lot of Macs out there running just fine with more RAM than Apple's original recommendation including two in this room. While your problem may be RAM related I would take the Genius' comment with more than a grain of salt. It is worth noting that thorough RAM testing can take several hours to run and still may not find all the memory errors.

It sounds like you have covered all the bases with your network, but if you haven't done so then in this order…
  1. Shut down your Powerbook
  2. Shut down the network extender (pull the plug)
  3. Shut down the router creating the network
  4. shut down the modem
  5. Wait at least 30 seconds
  6. begin powering everything back up in the reverse order that you shut them down and allowing each device to come up fully and stabilize before going to the next device in the chain.

I think the Apple employee was mostly in agreement with you about the amount of RAM. The RAM test was the only of all the extensive proprietary testing he did that failed, but told me it is a matter that the computer was not originally spec'd for that amount that triggers the error. I added the RAM about a month ago, it should have showed up immediately. He recommended an SSD drive in the 'chance' that the RAM is bottlenecking the mechanical drive.

The networking problem is not limited to the wireless network. Even when I reboot the modem and the router, I still can't get my network, not just internet, even when I run an ethernet cable directly into the computer.

This one really has me baffled, then there are the freezes and the magic mouse losing functionality. For now, I am only turning on the computer when I need it and shutting it down again.

At this point, it may pay you to swap your original DIMMs back in to make sure that your new ones haven't just taken this long to crap out on you.

Sold 'em.

So why not go back to OWC and tell them that Apple tested your RAM and it failed? They are a good company and will probably send out replacement RAM prior to receiving the old ones back.

Of course, the RAM may not be the source of your problems, but you gotta start somewhere. Bad chips could cause a host of problems and your woes are quite varied.
Posted By: slolerner Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 07/01/14 05:20 PM
Actually, I did call OWC this am. The first guy told me to run Rember to test the RAM, but I told him I was very concerned about heat, since the fans keep going on. So he recommended I run iStat widget to check the temp while doing it. CPU went right up to 170f. So much for that.

Called them back, fine print says 16GB RAM can only be used under Lion. I'm going to pull one chip, I guess, because Snowy is only going to be around for a limited time. Will pull one chip, run Rember, then pull that and put in the other one and run Rember again, make sure both are fine and put one away for safekeeping. I know if I only use one RAM slot I will lose some performance. I'm not sure what to do, for now I will test the chips individually, I guess.

Interesting that Mactracker makes no such stipulation.

The claim is one of those things that's kinda true, kinda not.

Snow Leopard is a 64-bit operating system. It is able to use 16 GB of RAM. However......

By default, it boots the 32-bit kernel, which isn't capable of directly addressing 16 GB of RAM. The user can choose whether to boot in 32-bit or 64-bit mode, by following these instructions on Apple's support site.
Posted By: slolerner Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 07/01/14 08:07 PM
I started up with 2 and 3 held down and began to perform the Rember, the RAM testing software along with iStat, the temperature check widget. The question is, how high can the CPU temp get on this thing before damage is done? It still went up to 170 pretty fast and the fan was spinning 2000. Is that ok, or should I just shut down and pull one of the chips?
Posted By: tacit Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 07/01/14 08:43 PM
Try in 64-bit mode and see what happens. The computer should shut down if it overheats before damage is done.
Posted By: slolerner Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 07/01/14 08:45 PM
I was in default in 64 when I didn't hold down 2 and 3 on startup, wasn't I?

There was a time when one of my computers overheated and did NOT shut down...
Posted By: tacit Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 07/01/14 10:55 PM
On almost all systems, Snow leopard defaults to 32-bit, not 64-bit.

But you said "I started up with 2 and 3 held down...."

It also depends on what default is for your MBP; Mactracker says "Architecture 64-bit", but I don't know whether that translates to its "default" boot state.
Posted By: alternaut Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 07/02/14 02:08 AM
There may be more recent Apple info on the topic, but the KB article Mac OS X v10.6: Macs that use the 64-bit kernel (linked to in tacit's first reply above) lists which Macs support the 64-bit kernel and which Macs use it by default. It also tells you where to find your Mac's current kernel status (System Profiler>System Software Overview). The article tacit linked to shows how to change your kernel from 32-bit to 64-bit or back.
Posted By: slolerner Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 07/03/14 03:05 AM
Well, I pulled the chips and put one back (has to go in the top slot, btw) and ran the RAM test program and after about 15 minutes, off the network, internal temp about 160f and fans spinning at 3600-3900.

Pulled that one and put in the second one by itself with the same result. I suspect the RAM test itself is causing too much heat. I now have just the second one in and am running fine so far. I looked in the System Profiler, and the default for 10.6 on my model is 64-bit kernel and extensions: No.

I put the case back on but didn't put the screws back in yet. That way I can put both chips in tomorrow, and yes, boot with the 4 and 6 pressed and see what happens. I'm thinking that you guys have solved the problem, my question is "Do I want to have to remember to hold down the 4 and 6 or the computer will melt or just leave this one chip in?" and I think the answer is run it on one chip for now. I just want to find out if running in 64-bit kernel mode with both chips inside will cause what seems to be these heat-related or over-processing errors because if that is the case, I will send the chips back and get a set of 4's.

Problem happening again!!! Running on the one 8GB RAM chip.

Zapped the PRAM and it went away. Something else is happening. Internal battery?

I mean clock battery, not large, power battery.
Posted By: joemikeb Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 07/25/14 04:53 PM
According to MacTracker 7.3.2 your mid 2010 MacBook Pro does not have a backup (a.k.a. clock or PRAM battery).

OK, finally got a kernel panic. While I was using Firefox. I had to restart again almost immediately because it froze up again, but no panic that time, so this is from the console log and may include the restart report.

I've got zero ability to read your reports, so I'm just going to throw out an off-the-wall suggestion that you try re-running the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1...can't hurt...just maaay help.

Good luck. smile

Edit: Have you run DiskWarrior or anything of its ilk?
Posted By: artie505 Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 08/06/14 11:32 PM
I forgot to mention that aside from whatever updating Software Update tells you to do after you run the Combo, you'll also have to update Safari (because the Combo includes a Safari update that rolls your current 5.1.10 back to an earlier version).

If you're wavering, I strongly encourage you to run the Combo; your systemic issues suggest that systemic "medicine" may be in order.

Edit: And at the very least, you ought to run Disk Utility > Repair Disk (while booted from another volume).

Replaced RAM with 2x4 GB and brought it to Apple Store at 1am! Hardware passed all tests, yay, and they did a disk repair from their startup and told me the problem is software. It was fine when I left the store but of course when I returned home the problems began again. So, I have it started in safe mode and want to erase the disk and start over. The problem is that I have the SL DVD that came with the computer and now it is somewhat sacred and would rather at least be able to do the erase from another startup disk, which I don't know how to create. I made a DVD master from the SL Install Disk but can't seem to make a duplicate because when I use put a load a blank DL-DVD, Disk Utility doesn't 'see' it.

Under any circumstances, I'd certainly re-run the Combo before doing a nuke & pave...takes waaay less time and effort, and there's nothing to lose.

Too late. Nuked. Paved. We'll see what happens... At least I can say I was at the Apple Store at 2am.

I've used SimplyBurns to successfully, although not necessarily 100% successfully, duplicate a bunch of OS X DL/DVD install discs.

Before trying to duplicate a disc, I copy it to my desktop to make sure it doesn't choke on any I/O errors (and I've actually uncovered a bad disc by doing so).

Edit: Got my fingers crossed for you.

Well, things got hectic quick so I just erased a small external drive I have and did a system installation on that, it gave me at least a startup drive because there were many problems getting the internal drive to zero out with disk utility. Maybe part of the problem was something 'stuck' to that drive. Kept freezing the computer and had to keep starting over. Will make an official one when I get a chance. Will try what you suggested.

btw, the error string had them stumped at the Apple store, too. My theory is the problem originated with the airport software. Falling off the network was the first symptom before each freeze. One suggestion they made, because the network kept finally giving the message that the airport card was not installed was that since it is located inside the hinge, it may have become damaged through ordinary use. When I reinstalled the system, I left off the airport update software for now and so far, so good. One step at a time.

Uhhh... Well, they've certainly got all bases covered. (Surely, they've got a way to check an airport card...haven't they?)
Posted By: slolerner Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 08/08/14 02:32 PM
Well, in their defense, all the hardware tests came out ok. I don't know if that includes testing the airport card. If it is in the hinge, it could very well be an intermittent problem depending on what the connection looks like.

With an intermittent problem like this they can test the Airport card or any other component and unless it is in failing mode at the time they perform the test, it will test good. Thirty seconds or one closing and opening of the lid later it may test bad. It is relatively easy to test a problem that can be reliably reproduced, but this kind of a problem may not be infallibly identified until it deteriorates to a total failure.

Well, definitely Firefox 30.0 is a problem. Page just would not load. I went back to 28.0. I also did not install the airport update when 're-paving.' So far, so good.

If you check out "What's New" (ie, release notes) in Firefox versions 29-30, you'll note a number of unresolved problems relating to Mac OS X at the bottom of the list. That's one of the reasons I haven't bothered to update my Firefox 28.

Oh. GTK. Ok, so something went wrong and I'm back where I was. Can I completely replace the HD with my Time Machine backup from a few hours ago?

More specifically, I think what set it off was that on one of my backup drives there was a mysterious 'system' folder, and when I deleted it, I think that's when it happened. What was that folder and again, can I get back to where I was completely?

The internal HD seems to be linked to that backup drive and even tho I erased free space on it, it will not eject. It is not my TM drive, I use Silverkeeper with it.
Posted By: slolerner Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 08/09/14 01:05 PM
Wiped the drive again. Now it won't let me install SL. Is there a way to set this back to factory defaults?
Posted By: artie505 Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 08/09/14 04:27 PM
What error message are you getting?
Posted By: slolerner Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 08/09/14 09:04 PM
I'm at the Apple Store now. It says Snow Leopard cannot be installed on this disk. Please select a Time Machine or oner backup you wish to restore from. I don't understand. The external drive it wouldn't eject is off and disconnected and I zero'ed out the internal. There does not seem to be any reason I cannot reformat the internal drive as I did before, start over, because it seemed when I rebuilt it before perhaps sometime when I copied old files from the SilverKeeper backup, that disk and the internal one on the mac became linked. I don't know what that system folder was on the SilverKeeper drive, it was not a full system folder, nor was it an alias, the only visible items were internet files of some type...

I think I earned my title today! I was using the SL disk from my 15" Macbook Pro. Double Duh. Duh. Anyway, I am here, they are testing the HD extensively and are installing 10.9 so they can run an extended airport card test. (Have to install the system so they can disconnect the ethernet startup cable.)

Round three, email woking, using Safari, tucked away in my treehouse far from the Glass Cube on 5th Ave. Will keep you posted.

Have you nuked Mavericks and repaved with Snowy?
Posted By: slolerner Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 08/13/14 01:39 AM
They offered to put a full version of Snowy on before I left, but I don't install some of the updates so went home, paved the driveway, and let it snow again.
Posted By: slolerner Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 08/19/14 03:43 PM
Ok, the problems are back and it HAS to be the drive. Will this work in my Mid 2010 MBP Version 7,1 running Snowy?

Western Digital 750 GB WD Black SATA III 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache Notebook Hard Drive WD7500BPKX?

I presently have a WD7500BPKT in it. Is the newer one going to be of any advantage or should I just replace what I have?
Posted By: joemikeb Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 08/19/14 08:32 PM
The only advantage I can think of the new drive have is the additional 250GB more capacity.
Posted By: slolerner Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 08/19/14 09:36 PM
That's not it, I think it's the SATA III??? They are both 750GB.

Is the SATA III compatible with what I have?
Posted By: tacit Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 08/19/14 11:57 PM
According to a quick Google search, your WD7500BPKT is also SATA III. You should be good to go!
Posted By: slolerner Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 08/20/14 12:09 AM
Then what is the difference between the two? I just want to be SURE I'm not headed into more HD problems!
Posted By: artie505 Re: Weird Assorted Problems??? - 08/20/14 12:23 AM
The BKPT is a 3.0Gb/s drive, and the BPKX is a 6.0Gb/s drive.

The 6 is backwards compatible, but it will only run at 3.0Gb/s.
