As I alluded to in my previous post, there are 8 main versions of Java extant, several of which you may need, depending on the requirements of the Java-dependent apps you use on your Mac. Currently only versions 6 and 7 are being updated for Mac OS X, the former by Apple, the latter by Oracle. Apple will no longer develop Java versions for Mac OS X, except for updates to its version 6. Oracle took over development of Java for Mac OS X from v.7 onward. With this in mind, the following updates are the most recent:
Last June, Apple released its 'update 17' for Java 6 (see second digit in version number), in different flavors for its different OSes. These updates are listed in Software Update, and include the one grelber referred to (incorrectly as from mid-October).
-
Java 1.6.0_65 for Snow Leopard
-
Java 1.6.0_65 for Lion and Mountain Lion.
Last October, Oracle updated Java 7 (see second digit in version number) with
-
Java 1.7.0_45 for Lion and up.
Oracle Java updates are
not listed in Software Update.
So there is no contradiction, but lots of confusion. Regardless of what I said above about possibly needing more than one version of Java, you may not be able to run the latest versions of Java 6 and 7 concurrently, because one or the other version may not be available for the OS version you're running. That said, the likelihood of that causing a problem for you is small.
