Apple Being Sued for 'Purposefully Slowing Down Older iPhone Models'

Hmm, is it giving Apple too much credit that they could slow down millions of iPhones at the same time the new models are released?

More likely people buy new phones, Apple releases new ones about the same time every year so that now, 1-2 years later, those original purchases have batteries that are fading away.

Sure, Apple should have flashed a dialog box on the screen that says something along the lines of "Tap 'Yes' to slow down your phone, 'Cancel' for intermittent crashes or just buy a new battery or iPhone".

Relying on the linked article, not at all.

Their error was in not being open about what they did, because it really was for the benefit of many users of (only relatively) old iPhones whom they could have treated the same way users of (really) old Macs are eventually treated.

Of course, though, if a new battery would suffice, what they did was kinda cold-hearted.

The Verge has an article with a claim to just that: after battery replacement, that iPhone 6 allegedly came back to original CPU frequency.

In that case, they weren't doing any favors for anybody!

Accused of Slowing Old iPhones, Apple Offers Battery Discounts

One of my daughters doesn't buy anything that Apple is saying about the battery being the issue (i.e. "....because older batteries could otherwise periodically overload"). She had an older iPhone5 with a swelling battery that caused the screen to push out. Apple said "That's our problem." She was offered a brand new iPhone5 for $100, so she bought one.

Her brand new iPhone5, purchased earlier this year and which would presumably have a brand new battery, has slowed right down.

Her "new" iPhone 5 is likely a refurb with an old battery. She can take it to Apple and they can put it on a gizmo that will show the number of charge/discharge cycles on the battery (the LiIon batteries have a tiny on-board computer that records this) and the total battery charge life left.
