tongue You may be better off eating dirt than red meat:

WHO Report Links Some Cancers With Processed or Red Meat

A Spoonful of Dirt

In my 70+ years on this earth, I have seen many fad warnings come and go. I'm not saying that this is a fad, but I distinctly remember:

1. Chocolate causes acne and is bad for the heart. Now, it has nothing to do with acne and is good for you.

2. Butter is bad and polyunsaturated fats are good. Now, polyunsaturated fats (aka hydrogenated oils) are bad.

3. Coffee is bad. Now, coffee helps with heart disease and may prevent Parkinson's.

I can't think of other examples offhand, but I have decided that if I follow the "recommendations du jour", I won't live any longer. If you do everything "right", you still die.

I think that the best advice is to do everything in moderation, including moderation.

No red meat eliminates beef, lamb, & veal; most pork products are highly precessed; fish often have dangerously high levels of mercury; poultry is associated with salmonella and assorted other diseases; fruits and vegetables are contaminated with insect poisons; most grains these days are genetically modified. Those truly interested in food safety may have to become anthropopagites.

As for me, I have a discount coupon for barbecued ribs — guess where I am going for dinner tonight! grin

FOLLOW UP The barbecue was GOOD! I went whole hog: ribs, brisket, smoked sausage, potato salad, onion rings, peach cobbler, and not one but two 32 ounce mugs of unsweetened Texas iced tea. A great ending to a day that began with a cancer scan. Take that harbingers of doom and gloom. grin

I'm with you. This panel seems determined to show that absolutely everything causes cancer. The link states that this group has evaluated a range of factors over the years "....and only one of these has ever been listed as “probably not” carcinogenic."

Let's not forget the most addictive substance in existence, namely oxygen. One breath and you're hooked for life. Withdrawal symptoms are always fatal.

It seems you're not alone. Ths article explains why the WHO's poorly explained decision to release the report is "....at best a reminder that moderation, as in all things dietary, is the best course."

In that case, I will never get cancer because I'm not a lab rat. wink

It is almost certain you are a lab rat and are completely unaware of it. More and more research is being done by computer analysis of supposedly anonymous medical and other records. So if you have been to a doctor, hospital, or other practitioner, have life or health insurance (including medicare and medicaid), teach or attend public schools or universities, contribute to or receive benefits from social security, been arrested, etc. — your data has probably been used in a variety of studies. So you are a lab rat whether or not you know or consent to it. Because the data is "anonymous" researchers are able to get around any HIPAA protections — they only kick in when information identifying a specific individual is revealed.
