Apple today announced Snow Leopard upgrade (notice that is not an update) will be on sale at the Apple Stores on Friday August 28th. Online orders placed by Wednesday August 26 are expected to arrive in your mailbox August 28th as well. The pricing is as follows:

• Single user Snow Leopard upgrade -- $29
• Five license "Family Pack" upgrade -- $49
• Single user Snow Leapard "Box set" including OS X 10.6, iLife '09, and iWork '09 -- $169
• Five license "family pack" box set -- $229

The general system requirements are:

• Mac computer with an Intel processor
• 1GB of memory
• 5GB of available disk space
• DVD drive for installation
• Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
• Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

There is no mention of OS X 10.5 as a requirement so my assumption is even the upgrade is a full install DVD.

Reunion incompatible

This just received vai email-

"...To address these (incompatibility) problems, we will be releasing a free update for Reunion 9 users next week. This update will be named "Reunion 9.0a"

If you use Reunion regularly, we (Leister Productions) advise you to delay the installation of Snow Leopard until you download and install the free Reunion update, version 9.0a..."

While 10.6 will run with any Intel processor, the more detailed description implies that unless it is at least an Intel Core Duo 2, not a "plain" Core Duo, many of the speed/enhanced features will not be implemented or won't be able to be taken full advantage of.

Then again, for just $29...

Or spend +$1000 for the new iMacs coming the end of this year (?) that will have 10.6 pre-installed.

Just found this Wikidot Snow Leopard Compatibility list.

NOTE: I would not recommend using any utility such as Cocktail, Onyx, TinkerTool, TinkerTool System, Diskwarrior, Drive Genius, TechTool Deluxe or Pro, cache cleaners, etc. until the developer verifies it is safe to use with Snow Leopard.

And one of our local Apple Stores has been closed for remodeling since the 10th. Guess when it reopens! That will be a zoo!!! I think I'll steer clear of that store for a few days. But, I do want to find out the upgrade path from Tiger to the White Cat eventually.

Dang Jon, I was just about to post that link to a new thread!

What will be interesting to discover is what exactly it's using to check for malware, how effective it is vs third-party options, how resource intensive it is on a regular basis, how frequently updates definitions, and whether it only checks package installs or other routine processes and actions.

Since I personally don't feel the need for regular active malware protection on my Mac vs the resources required for it, hopefully it's either adjustable or very limited in scope. They'd be smart to make the default limited in scope and to sell a premium add-on with subscription costs (maybe free to .Mac MobileMe customers or what-not).

This should be no big surprise to anyone. It has been Adobe's consistent policy in at least the recent past to support only the latest release of its products with a new OS upgrade.

According to the Pogue article linked in another thread, that's correct. But at $170 and with software included that I don't want, that's no deal. I'll have to find out if I can buy Leopard for $129 and the 5-license Snow Leopard for $49 since we have two already running Leopard that I'd like to upgrade - one mine, the other two being gifts. Then I'm out $180.

One of those Leopards is the black disc, the other is gray. I'm assuming that there's no legal/ethical way to transfer ownership of the black disc to the third Mac on Tiger. Is that correct?

Hopefully I will be upgrading to Snow Leopard in a new machine, but don't know when. Wife probably will beat me. To Snow Leopard that is.
What I further don't understand is the the implication, or , in fact, definite statement in some articles that "The reasoning is that these folks never paid the $129 back in 2007 to upgrade to Leopard." I upgraded to Tiger from Jaguar, hence not having paid to have Panther installed, as I am sure did many other people, so why should this upgrade be treated differently by Apple?

Yes Jon, thanks for that link. I hear you, Mike. But if I can upgrade three Macs for $50 I won't worry too much about the old policy. Ya gots to be in the right place at the right time! If it doesn't work for some reason, then I'll look into the feasibility of legally transferring ownership of that black Leopard disk.
