I watched a news item this morning about people getting high by snorting bath salts....which is apparently an extraordinarily dangerous practice. However, the first question that came to my mind was 'How do people discover this?'. Who first asked the question: "I wonder what would happen if we draw some bath salts up our nose?"

It's a little like people who lick toads. Who was first? "Hey, look what I found, a big, ugly, slimy toad. What should we do with it?"

"I dunno. Maybe we should lick it."

It has been said that the bravest man who ever lived was the first one to drink cow's milk. He said to himself, "I think that I'll squeeze one of those things and drink whatever comes out."

The article I saw indicated those particular bath salts are sold almost exclusively in Head Shops are expensive and come in containers about the size of a 35mm film cartridge (if you are old enough to remember 35mm film). It sounds suspiciously as if they were purpose made and not accidentally discovered.

And the dumbest kid was the one who, on a dare, licked the steel fence at St Pat's Church in the middle of a prairie winter. Oh wait, that was me....never mind.
