How do I get the red (1) in the Forum list to go away?

When a post's been moved, we wind up with an original and a duplicate; you've got to look at both of them.

It's a PIA that's made me crazy more than once before I figured out which version I hadn't looked at.

I moved your question (and Artie's response) out of the 7 Pass Zero-out Drive on a Latest System? thread and into this new thread here in the FineTunedMac Feedback forum.

When we move an entire thread from one forum to another public forum we leave what's called a pointer that appears in the original forum's list of threads. That pointer has the same name as the moved thread but has a black arrow in the far left column, and is basically a post that contains a link to the moved thread and usually also notes who moved it from where to where.

It's not clear to me which forum you were/are seeing the red (1) on but if it's the "Mac OS X 10.0 - 10.5.x" forum where "7 Pass Zero-out Drive on a Latest System?" was started then it seems likely the pointer is the cause. Whichever forum it is, though, the red number should disappear once you visit that forum.

It is in the forum listing for the original thread for "7 Pass Zero-out Drive on a Latest System?" That's why I posted the question there.

And, nope, the red 1 is still there....after I've visited both threads, this one, et cetera....many times over.

So it's in the "Mac OS X System" list of threads, and it didn't go away even after you posted in the thread there.

That's weird. confused

Maybe it's a cookie or cache thing. If logging out/in doesn't fix it then I'd clear browser cache, and if that doesn't do it I'd try deleting FTM's cookies.

Did you try clicking on the link in the pointer thread?

The issue just came up again, ryck.

To get rid of the (1) I had to get to the post through the forum index (I clicked on the latest post, not the thread, itself.); clicking on the latest post in the main index didn't turn the trick.

That's the way it's done. tongue

I seem only to have to visit the specific forum index to make those vestigial red numbers disappear; no need to visit the thread itself.

That seems to have worked. Thanks. Also worked on Ira's iMovie thread

PS...I haven't been ignoring you....was out of town in long meetings for a few days.

You apparently don't even have to visit the thread to get rid of the red; you've only got to visit the particular forum's index.

I assumed that you were out of town...no apologies necessary. smile

It's taken some doing ( tongue ), but I finally understand why I've had so much trouble with (1)s, and this will clarify the problem for others...

I enter FTM via "Forums" by clicking on a "Last Post", followed by clicking on "Index" to get to the particular forum's index.

Or, so I thought.

It turns out that when a post has been moved, clicking on A Forum's "Last Post" (which has become a pointer) takes me directly to B Forum (the real "Last Post's" new location), so I never get to either the post on which I think I clicked or A Forum's index, and their associated (1) doesn't get cleared.

So, to get rid of a (1) representing a pointer in A Forum you must click on A Forum, itself. (No need to then visit the thread.)

As far as I'm concerned, that-all's totally non-intuitive behavior, if not a bug. (Didn't things work differently once upon a time, with the Mods, not the software, inserting the links, and clicking on a "Last Post" actually getting you to where you thought you were going?)

What's shown in the Last Post column is not the pointer. If you go to the Mac OS X Applications forum now and compare the URL for the "Time Outs With Safari" pointer there you'll see it's not the same as the URL of the Last Post on the main index.

The software has always inserted the links. I don't use Last Post links to navigate so don't know if the behavior of taking you to the thread in the new forum is new.

It's a "pointer" in the sense that clicking on it takes you to the new location...not in the sense in which you originally used it. (I guess I could have used a better word.)

Edit: But, yeah, this is new behavior, although I can't date it.
