iMac i7 screen bands

iMac i7 intel core 2 duo. I turned the computer on and this is what the screen looks like. Four progressively darker horizontal bands across the whole screen. It does not show up on a screen capture. There is also some ghost imaging if I move a window. I tried PRAM, SMC, restart, display resolution change. [img:left] http://justinleatherman.com/imacscreen.jpg[/img]

It looks to me like the display backlight is failing or has failed. It doesn't show up on a screen grab because the bands are caused by the backlight in the display rather than by anything the computer is sending to the display. It might be necessary to take the computer in for service.

It looks like the graphics card to me, but whether it is the graphics card or the backlight, the fix is the same, Take it to the Genius Desk at the Apple Store.

Would Apple Hardware Test be helpful as a diagnostic tool?

Would Apple Hardware Test be helpful as a diagnostic tool? If the problem is the graphics card as opposed to the backlight, yes. Many graphics card failures can be spotted by Apple's hardware test. If the problem is the backlight, it's less likely the Apple hardware test will spot it.

Did a full extended Apple Hardware test and it detected nothing. Beginning to think the backlights are the problem. It was transported in a vehicle for 30 miles. The bulbs are touchy I hear. The four bands look like they are in the same location as the bulbs.
Any suggestions on where to get bulbs?

I've had varying levels of success using eBay for such parts-supply needs......where your REAL issue will be is the potential for additional damage you may incur during your disassembly/re-assembly while replacing the backlighting yourself.

Yes, see the jwleatherman's first post above. Whoops, how about some Visene? That is probably a bad LCD panel with banding like that. First time I've seen one with four distinct regions before though.

Did you ever find out what was causing the banding and ghosting? I am having the exact same problem with my 24in imac.
