Software Update info says:
Quote:
Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 7 delivers improved compatibility, security, and reliability by updating J2SE 5.0 to 1.5.0_24, and updating Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_20 for 64-bit capable Intel-based Macs. J2SE 1.4.2 is no longer being updated to fix bugs or security issues and remains disabled by default in this update.

..and that's more information of a useful nature than I could find chasing the links for more information! I wanted to find out if it is advisable to install it if my Mac is only 32-bit capable.

So, my next task was to figure out which one it is. I thought that it was only 32-bit for some reason. But, System Profiler > Hardware Overview only says this:
Quote:
Model Name: Mac mini
Model Identifier: Macmini2,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 1.83 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 2 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MM21.009A.B00
SMC Version (system): 1.19f2
Serial Number (system): YM7486V1YL1
Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-0016CBAD5C6B

So if that's in there in some sort of code, I need to know how to decipher it. I could not find anything else in SP that says 32-bit or 64-bit. Where do I need to look??

Great link! I didn't think to search Apple's site. But, I'm usually not very good at it!

Why do they call processors "64-bit capable" if they won't run in 64-bit mode??

Try this: Type your query into a Google search box, and append it with (space)site:apple.com

Google does faaar better job of searching Apple's website than we mere mortals are capable of. (It's dkmarsh's link, by the way.)

I think the word "capable" is, in and of itself, your answer; i.e. the processors can run in 64-bit mode, but only if the rest of the machine architecture supports it.

Thanks.

I never saw that one before...even when we went through that episode back in the old country in which (I think it was) dianne was the only one able to find Tiger discs.

that is a very nice search link. I've always had issues with apple's KB searches doing an "or" search instead of an "and", and it won't let me " -dontsearchforthis" like you can in google either.

Ummm... Nobody's said either yes or no, but since it's in part a security update I guess the answer's yes!

Yeah. My conclusion is based on the message in SU quoted in my first post. I didn't see the point if I was 32-bit. .... Man, is that inflation, or what? Would the second part of that old saw involve a sack of half dollars? wink
