OS 10.5.8 I have just trashed ClamXav and downloaded ClamXav with ClamAV 0.97.4 backend. To install the plugin, it says to go to Home-library and open the Contextual Menu Items folder. It says to Copy "ScanWithClamXav.plugin" to that Contextual Menu Items folder. Inside that folder is (1) item. Question, How do I Copy "ScanWithClamXav.plugin" to that Contextual Menu Items folder? Forgive my ignorance. jaybass

If you Option-drag (select item, hold down Option key and drag) an item from one location to another, it leaves the original and makes a copy in the destination.
Is that what you meant?

Thanks Ira, Option drag was all I needed to do and it is now in the contextual folder. However, I clicked "Scan with Clamxav.plugin" and a window asked if to open it and it opens with itunes but in the itunes apps, there is nothing there. I tried to change it to open with ClamXav but It said I don't have permission or words to that effect. This software is 2.2.4 and it supposed to have ClamAV 0.97.4 backend but it does not show in system profiles. Any ideas? jaybass

If the item in question resides on a mounted disk image, you needn't even use the Option key while dragging, since the OS treats a mounted disk image as a separate volume.

Yes there is a disk image and when you open it, one of the options is how to install the plugin and it specifically says to copy "ScanWithClamXav.plugin" to the contextual menu items folder which I did as per Ira's instructions. You seem to suggest there is another way copying that plugin to that folder because OS treats a mounted disc image as a separate volume. Can you clarify? Below is the contents of that disc image. My concern now is, have I got the whole download? Thanks for your reply, jaybass

I am not familiar with the ClamXav interface, but you usually don't open plug-ins directly; they are accessed as needed by the application that requires the plug-in.
What happens if you just open ClamXav and do what you want to do? If the plug-in is in the right location, the the application should find it and be able to use it.

DKMarsh was just observing that most downloads arrive on our Desktops as a mounted disk image (their icon may look like an external drive). These disk images cannot (usually) be changed by the user, somewhat like a commercial CD or DVD. So if you drag something off of it, the original on the image remains and an option-drag is not necessary.
It would seem that your download is complete. Be sure to drag the ClamXav application into your Applications Folder and then try using it.

I have no problem using ClamXav, it's just that the backend doesn't show anywhere. The log shows successful download today so I guess I will leave at that. Thanks again. jaybass

I have been using ClamXav for some time, there IS a front and back end - look up at the menu bar and you'll find the whole mini menu set there. It contains update defs, scan folders etc etc. and, open Sentry and so on. If you never shut down and never logout, may be you wouldn't see any of this, but if you do log out you'll see it there, in the menubar. The GUI is customisable and very friendly, and the log lives in Logs, open Console and its there, but DO Donate, he struggles. Pashdej

You are right about a front & back. I did try to donate but the currency is only in sterling and I couldn't convert it so I'll try again next time I'm prompted. Thanks. jaybass
