Anyone having problems installing the 11.6.5 update into Office 2004?
I have tried using Microsoft's on-line process and I have also gone their site and downloaded the update. In either method I only get as far as the window that is checking for programs, at which point the installation hangs up.
Command-Opt-Esc confirms "not responding" and I force quit.

No problems here. Some questions: do you meet the MS prerequisites for this updater? See the v.11.6.5 Update description for details; note the requirement for v.11.6.4 to be installed. Also, is your Office install identical to the way it was originally, i.e., you didn't by any chance append any version numbers etc. to the various apps, or move some away from the others out of the MS Office folder? If all this is OK and it still won't work, you might try to repair permissions (Disk Utility) before running the updater again. I left a note to that effect in my Office folder after needing this with a prior update.

I had the exact same problem--I got as far as the place where it's checking and then nada. It just hung there, doing nothing.
I repeated it several times and still noting. Eventually, I got up for dinner, inadvertently leaving the installer running. When I came back, it had proceeded to the next step, leading me to believe that it's not *really* hanging...it's just sitting there for a very, very long time. I was able to install after that.
How long? I don't know, but I was away from the computer for about half an hour.

....note the requirement for v.11.6.4 to be installed. At first I thought I was going to have one of these faces because I checked and am 11.6.3. However, I have the same problem with installing 11.6.4, so now I'm thinking I had the same problem last time and probably decided to "come back to it" but forgot. you didn't by any chance append any version numbers etc. to the various apps, or move some away from the others out of the MS Office folder?
If all this is OK and it still won't work, you might try to repair permissions (Disk Utility) before running the updater again. No changes to version numbers, and I have done both Permissions Repair and run Disk Warrior. ryck

Given my first shot at 11.6.4 was terminated, due to impatience, and then not done due to forgetfulness...I'm thinking I'll try your solution. I could use a bite and my dog could use a walk. Advise later. ryck Edit - Later Advice: It seems that time is all that was required. The install is completed. Hmmmm...so I wonder where I can buy some patience?

This morning I got an update notification for the MS update installer and it mentioned this was critical for future updates. Perhaps they found and have fixed the problem. ryck Edit: And I no sooner sent this when I got another update - for the XML File Format Converter. They've been busy over at MS.

This morning I got an update notification for the MS update installer and it mentioned this was critical for future updates. Perhaps they found and have fixed the problem. I'm using Office 2008 and got the same notice about the MS Updater. I dutifully opted to install it, MS Updater relaunched, and I was notified that I needed to install it. I checked the version of MS Updater that was installed and it was, indeed, the newest one. I even downloaded the updater manually from MS, ran the installation, and got the same erroneous notification. The solution was to remove the MS Updater plist and clear the MS Updater cache from ~/Library/Preferences and ~/Library/Caches, respectively. I'm posting this in case someone else has the same issue.

Hmmmm....so I figured I should check on my installation and it turns out I don't have one. The updater went through the process and said "Installation Successful", but I still have V1.1.2, not V2.3.3 A subsequent visit to Mactopia reveals the update is for Office 2008 and Office 2011, so I guess Office 2004 folks can disregard the notification. The XML Converter update did result in a new version, 1.2.1. ryck

It looks like I have to add some more details as well. When I mentioned that the Office 11.6.5 updater had not caused me any problems, I omitted to provide my system details: iMac G5 iSight running Mac OS X 10.5.8. That's in contrast with Ryck's more current system, a potentially important difference given the various other updaters now in the mix. In the context of providing my reply above, I checked all Office updaters currently available, and noticed under Additional Tools the utility updaters for Office 2008 and 2011 excluding 2004, but because Ryck is running Office 2004 I considered them irrelevant and didn't mention them. The Office updater problem may thus be one restricted to updaters running under Snow Leopard (and possibly Lion), and not under Leopard. The issue described by Jon may very well be picked up by MS in a subsequent update.

Ryck,
I seem to remember a problem such as yours, but alas, the details are now dust. But the solution (at least for me), that I recall.
Put the updater/installer on your desktop and then restart in SafeBoot mode. Whilest there, try running the µS installer.
As I recall, there was some third party app interfering with the installation. But which one(s), that too is lost to the ravages of time.
Whether this will work for you, I dunno, but trying couldn't (well, shouldn't) hurt…

I did try dragging the Updater icon to the Dock and then a Safe Boot but, of course, that was before I woke up and realized I needed to do 11.6.4 first . After that I just let them churn until they installed, per Tacit's accidental experience. Next time I have the problem I'll give the 'Icon to Dock/Safe Boot' a shot - after first making sure I haven't skipped a version. Too soon old, too late smart. ryck
