Microsoft Font Query

In Office/Word 2008, directly under Fonts in the Menu Bar, I have:

1. Font Collection (a drop down menu with 5 indentured options)
2. Calibri (Theme Heading)
3. Cambria (Theme Body)

Then all the other fonts are displayed as expected.

I would like to delete those first 3 options.

Is there a way to easily do this?

I haven't got Word installed, Harv, so I can't really help, but thanks for the wonderfully descriptive typo.

I'm trying to think of how an "indentured option" works, and it's making my head hurt. It's trying to recall days in American History class, and that's just not meshing well with the thread...

I have the same. Looks like it is a default display. I don't think this can be modified because it is part of the main menu.

Many thanks, Alex.

I also posted at MacOSHints as a few MVPs hang out there.

So that others, ever searching this issue may benefit, a quote from Diane Ross (MS MVP):

"Item 1 is produced by Font Book. 'Collections' are a feature of Font Book which organize fonts into groupings based on categories. Several are created by default, others can be user-defined. Perhaps deleting them in Font Book would be possible but I don't know what the system-wide impact might be... There is no provision in Word to remove them from the Fonts List.

Items 2 and 3 are produced by the document theme.

The Theme fonts are automatically listed & reflect the fonts used by the current Document Theme [Font Scheme]. The 2 fonts listed are those being used by Heading Styles 1-9 & by the Body Text styles. Since there is no option for 'no theme' there is no option to remove the Theme Fonts from the list.

A Word user should never see or use that menu: if they are formatting correctly with styles, they will never open the menu. The fonts they want are one click away in their styles. If they're using that menu, they are overriding their document/theme styles and will end up with unstable/broken documents.

The info is provided by Word MVPs, John McGhie and Bob Jones"

So, why is it there in the first place? I have not seen a more ridiculous statement in a while. Broken documents just by accessing the menu??? These guys don't know what they are talking about. If one wants to change a font in a document, clicking on font name window in the formatting toolbar will enable the same drop-down menu with all three items listed again on top. I use this menu all the time but never had any problem. Am I missing something?
On another note, Harv, thanks a lot for the info.

Having worked with Word it is possible (and I have seen) in Word for Windows different results from choosing the same function from different places in the interface. Pagination, for example, can be activated from at least three distinct commands. Different pagination schemes can then exist in your document that you did not intend. While not unstable in the sense of crashing, the document could no longer be paginated correctly and we had to use the back-up. The result was to cause considerable extra work and frustration. Word for Mac is really no different. Different programmers but the same design theory.

Word is written by software teams and then the different modules are linked together. It is not impossible that invoking the what appears the same function (to you) results in entirely different code being executed. At the very least, a different module will be called with local parameters passed to it. These may be different than parameters passed to the routine from the native module.

There, wasn't that fun to read? Now you may have some insight into why MS products are such huge kludges.

Many thanks Starmac, most informative (and fun to read).

As much as I grouse about Microsoft, I remain thrilled that I am not a software developer.

Now, I can but hope that if Office 2011 installs fonts, it auto-cleans any detritus it may have made.

Good luck navigating the ribbon. I understand this version gets rid of menus like they did in the last version for Windows.
