possibly the next step would be to create a new user account, and see if that new user account has those same problems or not.

Have you recently added any new fonts? I've found a lot of problems like this seem to be font-related.

Thanks. I added a new account called test and it worked fine. So something is corrupt in my main user account. Where do I go from here?
I appreciate your time in this matter.

Thanks. I added a new account called test and it worked fine. So something is corrupt in my main user account. Where do I go from here? Most likely, something in your (regular user's) Library is corrupted. Here are some folders and files to try moving to the trash (either one at a time to narrow down the problem, or all at once for brute force back-to-work action): ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWork.Pages/
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWork.fonts
~/Library/Caches/iWorkApps/
~/Library/Application Support/iWork/
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWork.Pages.LSSharedFileList.plist
~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.iWork.Pages.*
note: ~ = /Users/yourhome note: * = more letters or numbers in the name

OK. Now move the files you've got there one by one (or all at once) to the desktop, and try to load Pages after every move. A problem file is identified by the fact that removing it allows Pages to load. Keeping the removed files around allows you to return them if removals don't help.
Pages will create default versions of missing .plist files and caches upon loading, so you may need to re-enter any settings changes you made before this problem arose, which were stored in the old plist file(s). You can then move the problem file(s) on the desktop to the trash and empty that, or archive them for further analysis if you so choose.
NB. Removal of .plists files needs to be done when the app in question is not running, otherwise the data is kept in the app's memory and is written back to the plist file when the app quits. In your case Pages is not running because it won't even load.

Friends, pages is up and going again. Thank you very much.
Appears ~/Library/Application Support/iWork/ was the culprit.

Looks very similar to a problem where AppleWorks won't launch. More or less the same fix involved there.
