I would like to make an encrypted dmg of all my Address Book addresses, but I don't know the proper file name and location. Where does that critter reside?

Inside the folder Jon mentioned, there are several files. If your address book data has migrated from older versions of Mac OS X (before Tiger, if I recall correctly), the data is in two different files, one of which is no longer being updated. The newer one has a different xml file format than the old one.
If you are doing this project to have a backup, it might a good idea to configure the export preferences for Address Book to include the Notes field, then export the entire address book as vCards.
