Problem using ditto or rsync to clone

I just spent around five hair-tearing hours testing an unreleased beta of backuplist+, a front-end for rsync

That reminds me... I just ran into an interesting problem that just came out of the woodwork in 10.5 and 10.6 at the same time... attempting to clone a hard drive with either ditto OR rsync tends to hang the process with 1 core at 100% and not go anywhere, and can be a pain to force quit.

The offending drives all had ".journal" in their root, and that turned out to be the cause. Whatever it specifically is for, it absolutely kills anything that tries to copy (read or write, hard to tell which... betting write) it.

Rsync can be told to exclude files... ditto cannot, and that was a bugger and and a half.

V1,

I moved your off-topic reply to Artie505 into this forum so that YOUR separate topic could better get the attention it deserves without derailing Artie's thread.

You might want to give it a title that better reflects your topic....

Thanks for the thought, but my thread's a train-wreck already. tongue
