CNET TechTracker app - 1.0 beta 2, apparently the successor to Version Tracker Pro, is now available for download. Has anybody tried it? Considering how "well" the CNET forums work, I have grave doubts about their software. That software is not listed at MacUpdate, not that that's surprising.

Take a look at the user ratings on VersionTracker. CNET TechTracker 1.0b2 has a ripping 1.5 stars. Based on that and the user reviews, apparently it is not yet ready for prime time.

From the product description: "Updates are guaranteed safe and spyware free as TechTracker utilizes CNET Download..."

Oddly, there are no details re the details of the guarantee. Perhaps I could get a new pony for my granddaughter.

Indeed I am pleased that I let my VT Pro subscription lapse.

In place of VTP, I have begun using AppUpdate (donation ware). It is a Dashboard Widget that, IMNHO, does what VTP was supposed to do. The interface is not as polished and some features are missing, but operationally, it's as advertised. Should you choose, it will simultaneously check for updates on VT, MacUpdate, and Apple.

CNET, Feh!

Harv,

Thanks for the link to AppUpdate. I'm trying it and it found an update that I had missed (and I check manually every day at VT and MacUpdate). I'll go through the rest of the list and see what it comes up with. It's not perfect but it seems to have its uses. If it looks good, I'll make a donation.
