This is so crazy. I have deleted the key chains and the SMTPs several times on the phone with mail provider US tech support. Each time we got it to work and then it stopped again. What I am able to do now is originate an email on my iPod, receive it on my mbp, and forward it from my mbp to itself. If I originate an email on my computer, it does not show up when I send it to either my iPad or my mbp. But the connection doctor is telling me the SMTP are green lighted. The triggering event for this was when my network IP range changed. I got everything set back to defaults, it's all good now, router reset, net extender reset, printer working, iPad working.
Edit: originates from my iPad, not my iPod, typo above
