More and more lately, when I bring up websites, the words are jumbled across each other and it's hard to read. I usually use Safari but I tried Firefox this morning to see if it made and difference and it didn't. Any ideas? Here is one url to try. Maybe it's just certain sites? Thanks. Rita

The automotive site you provided looked OK to me in Safari.

Try restarting your computer. Others may also suggest clearing the caches in Safari (Develop menu>Empty Caches).

On a Mac since 1984.
Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

Hi Ira:

Actually I clear my cache frequently and restart my computer every morning. I also use OnyX weekly. It still happens. frown Maybe it's some other setting I should change?

Ditto for me using Firefox 28.

I imagine you would have used the standard techniques for clearing weirdness (eg, cache clearing, restarting), so what you're experiencing may require some more refined troubleshooting.

That site looks fine to me in Safari 5.1.10 and Firefox 30.0. Maybe it's a font issue? Try using Font Book to resolve duplicates and disable corrupted fonts.

Another thought: Disable extensions and see if that helps. If so, you'll have to do some detective work to nail the guilty party.

Hi Jon:

Yes, I had disabled extensions. No dice. I've never used font book. I brought it up, but don't know to to find or get rid of corrupted fonts. I used "help" but it didn't help. LOL!

I did check for duplicate fonts, and there are none.

Also, under Edit, it says:

To check for corrupt fonts, launch Font Book and, from the Edit menu, choose Select All. Then, from the File menu, click Validate Fonts. The process may take a few moments but you will be able to see any corrupt or questionable fonts. Then, you can select them and, via the Edit menu, disable them.

Thanks, Jon. I learned a new skill. But, alas, no corrupt fonts and still have the problems.

I wish I could embed a snapshot here to show you guys what it's doing. I even zoomed in and out to see if that made a difference, but no.

Hi, Rita,

To post a screenshot, you've got to upload it to a host (I use Free Image Hosting.) and post a link...icon to the right of the smiley on the posting page.

In order to use the link they give you, e.g.

<a href="http://www.freeimagehosting.net/"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/9xQk74v.png" alt="Free Image Hosting"></a>

you use only the part between the second set of quotes, i.e. http://i.imgur.com/9xQk74v.png" alt="Free Image Hosting. (Example that you can examine by hitting "Quote", instead of "Reply": Example)

(The service I used to use was much easier to work with but is no longer free. frown )

Not sure I understand how to do this but here goes. I went to Free Image and uploaded my screen shot and got the url. Here goes nothing.
Screen Shot

It worked! Thanks, Artie!! Hope someone can help me figure out why it's doing this.

It's only a small part of the page that's rendering incorrectly, but I can't begin to guess why. This is what I see.

(When you post screenshots, you've got to be careful to make sure there's nothing in them that you don't want to give away...like your name, if you care about it. I edit mine in Preview when they need cleaning up.)

Rita—

I think you've got a minimum font size set in your browser preferences which is forcing site content to display oddly.

In Safari, go to the Safari menu -> Preferences -> Advanced tab and look at Accessibility. It looks like the Never use font sizes smaller than checkbox is checked and its pop-up menu is set to 18. At least, when I set my own prefs that way, the result looks exactly like your screenshot.

(In Firefox, the relevant setting is Firefox -> Preferences -> Content -> Fonts & Colors -> Advanced… -> Minimum font size.)

Is something personal showing? I don't see it. Also, what you see is way better than what I see. That's weird.

Oh man, that took care of it! I unchecked the box. I've had it that way awhile now. Wonder why it just started acting up?

How did you know I had it checked not to go under 18?

Your name is showing in the top right corner. (Fast user switching?)

I still can't see my name on the link you gave me, but I DO see it in the upper right hand corner of my computer. Who knew? Thanks for the heads up.

Not to sound too dumb, but how do I edit something in Preview, especially a snapshot?

Your linked page shows your entire screen, including your menu bar.

Open your screenshot in Preview, select whatever you want to delete, hit "delete", and if your Preview acts like mine you'll see an anonymous grey area where what you wanted deleted used to be.

Edit: If you check Preview's menu bar you'll find a bunch of editing options under Tools > Annotate.

Well, I am not sure why I can't see it. Blind I guess.

Like I said, I don't want to appear dumb, but I only use Preview to open PDF's. I don't know how to use it to edit anything. When you say open it in Preview, I have no clue what that means. frown

I'm not sure what you can't see; in the top right corner of the screenshot you posted it says "Rita Mo...ue".

Double-click on your screenshot, and a Preview window will open. (Oh, I see... Preview opens an assortment of images as well as PDFs...pngs, jpgs, tiffs....)

I see my name now. Cripes! Good to know for when it might matter.

I double-clicked on my screen shot, and it opened up in Preview like you said, but I don't see a way to edit it. I feel like a beginner again.

Discovering that I could edit screenshots in Preview was a joy!

Your name, for instance: Select it by moving your cursor to make a box around it - I see a box with moving-line sides. - and hit "delete", and you'll see a grey area where your name was. Then, just save.

As I mentioned, you can also use Tools > Annotate to circle (etc.) stuff or add text or arrows to an image.

I'm always happy to pass on what little I know, Rita, particularly to someone who's actually interested in learning; thanks for being a good student and making the world's worst teacher feel a bit less deserving of the title. laugh
