I have one Mac running on Mountain Lion 10.8.3 and another running on Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
Google Earth 7.0.3.8542 runs fine on Snow Leopard, but it crashes every time I try to use the search feature while running Mountain Lion. I've sent plenty of those popup Send To Apple windows, but, so far, no fix. Is anyone else having this problem? Is there a work around? Search is a feature I can't do without while using Google Earth and I use it frequently, but no search feature is a royal pain. I already deleted the app and then downloaded it again, but that didn't help.

I can't answer your question, but I notice you're not using the latest & greatest version of Google Earth. Any reason why (as it might make a difference)?

Thank you for the suggestion. It is basic good practice. The "update" wasn't available the last time I checked. It is labeled "beta." I installed it and it did not fix the problem. I then got the bright idea to find an older version, but the one I located using the web site you suggested was the same old one I was using before. I went to a source I found on the Google search site and downloaded an "older" version, but it was blocked from loading with the warning that it was not from an approved developer. At that point, I deleted the "older version" and did not reinstall the latest version. I'll just do without on this computer until Google or Apple fixes the problem. Apparently Mac OS 10.8.4 is being tested, so I'll wait for that and try again. Thanks for the good suggestion. Unfortunately, it didn't pan out, but I was reminded to explore for a newer version before posting a gripe about my current version. This experience confirms my feeling that I'm better off leaving the other computer at 10.6.8. That is a very solid version and its successors have not impressed me with much reason to upgrade.

Although this subject is being discussed in another thread on this Forum, I'm posting this with a more catchy title since I've found the page that helps to solve the problem. If you're running Mountain Lion 10.8.3 and you've downloaded Google Earth 7, you'll experience crashes whenever you enter a search term. This address leads to a Google page for the Mac that provides downloads for earlier Google Earth versions. For example, I downloaded Google Earth 6.2 (the free version) and it solved my problem. Enter the following link in Safari and you can download the version you want whether it's the free version or the pro version.

Before opening the new downloaded app's dmg, you'll have to go to System Preferences and click on the Security & Privacy icon. Then, click on the General button. Unlock the window and click on Anywhere. Re-Lock the icon and then open the Google Earth dmg and install.

I deleted my problem Google Earth app before doing this stuff so I know that procedure works. For me, the new web plugin didn't work, so I left it alone. Then, if you had a more secure setting than Anywhere, go back to the Security and Privacy icon and change your setting back to what you prefer.

There's a rumor there that a Google Updater will come along and update to version 7, but I don't know anything about that. I thought we had to update manually.

I just created a new subject in this Forum and gave it the title: "Problems with Google Earth crash? Here's the cure"

After a lot of digging, I found the answer as described in the new title. I thought the title was more positive than the one here and might get someone's attention who was having the problem.

The solution can be found by downloading Google Earth 6.2 at this address:

The post I made a few days ago showed a two step procedure but, somehow, the first step link has been messed up. It turns out that the one shown in this post will get you to whatever version you want. I recommend GE 6.2. It has been flawless for me for a week. Hang onto the dmg file so you can replace 6.2 if some updater comes along and updates the app to a version that crashes on Search.

UPDATE: Today, 5 Aug 2013, Google Earth was updated BY GOOGLE on my Mac Pro from version 6.2 to version 7.1.1.1888. I did a search in Google Earth for a location on the updated version of Google Earth and the application crashed just like it did before when this update was made a couple of months ago.

I kept a Googleearth DMG on my desktop just in case this involuntary update ever happened again, so I re-installed version 6.2.2.6613 and did a search in Google Earth with no problem at all.

I hope Google figures out what the problem is between Google Earth and Mountain Lion or, I would hope that Apple would be curious enough to find and fix the difference before the next Mac OS update. My wife's iMac is still running on MacOS 10.6.8. Her Google Earth version 7.1.1.1888 has always been just fine.

In case some Mt. Lion user is reading this entry and is having this trouble, I just want to state that the GE version 6.2.2.6613 is still a good substitute for the 7 series updates. How to obtain the 6.2.2.6613 version is spelled out earlier in this thread.
