Shopping on eBay lately?

A few days ago Safari began failing to connect with eBay via links in e-mails, telling me that it can't connect to the server "rover.ebay.com."

Neither disabling extensions nor enabling Java has helped, and it can't be an entry in my hosts file, because Firefox connects with no issues.

Is anybody else experiencing this behavior?

Thanks.

Edit: Forgot to mention that clearing cookies and cache didn't help.

I have encountered similar freezes and/or failures to link using Safari as well as Chrome, iCab, etc. but never specifically with eBay. Usually quitting and restarting the browser solves the problem but on a few occasions, when OS X has been running for several days, I have had to reboot to clear Safari hangs. I have attributed this to a memory management error, but I truth I have no idea what causes it.

Since eBay uses JavaScript and not Java I am not surprised turning Java on and off had no effect. However, since Safari and Firefox each use their own Javascript interpreter and both are written to comply with the same ECMAScript standard, there are potentially minor differences in implementation that might have contributed to your particular problem.

Thanks.

I should have mentioned that I've restarted both Safari and my deuced Mac(hina) with no joy.

Life would be easier if eBay entertained e-mailed issues. frown

Doesn't either Jon or artie usually make that suggestion? grin

At any rate, it was on the mark, and I've already moved ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist and ~/Library/Safari, but with no joy.

I may just live with the problem. frown

More later...

I was d/l'ing Safari while you were typing the suggestion, literally, fully expecting reinstallation to be a useless exercise (because if the app was broken the issue would manifest itself in my test account), and my pessimism was not wasted. frown

Got it! Yaaay!!! grin

I had been intending to do a clean reinstall of OS X for several months because I was experiencing some wonky behavior, including a really weird Little Snitch glitch, so I figured that now was the time.

My first re-install of LS was no help because I had imported my old rules, but after it gave me some trouble I trashed the whole shebang and reinstalled again, and when the new installation asked me to connect to "rover" I clicked on "Forever," and that turned the trick.

Wondering whether I had set any "rover" related rules in the past, I booted into a pre-reinstall clone and found that despite the fact that Mail had always connected, I had never set a connect rule, nor did I find a deny rule that would have accounted for my issue... Got me beat! confused

Edit: So although I thought I had a Safari problem, I guess it was actually a Little Snitch corruption problem. Who'da thunk it?
