Hi:

Well, I got myself into a pickle. I looked up how to start receiving read receipts in my email program and entered the command into Terminal. (I know nothing about Terminal, just copied what I was told to do). It worked. Now my friends are complaining that they can't read or send me an email without clicking on some boxes.

Anyway, I want to remove this command. I looked up how to do it and tried what I have pasted below. The first part anyway, and it didn't work. The second part (in bold) I don't understand anyway.

Any suggestions?

Disable Automatic Read Receipt Requests Again in Mac OS X Mail

To turn requesting a read receipt for every message back off:

Execute "defaults delete com.apple.mail UserHeaders" at Terminal command prompt to delete all custom headers or set UserHeaders back to what it was before you added "Disposition-Notification-To

Make it simple, please.

Thanks so much.

Rita

Sorry for being simplistic, Rita, but did you enter that command with or without the quotes?

If "with," try again without.

Rita, if you post a link to the original instructions that got you into the pickle we may be better able to undo things back to normal for you.....

FWIW, I took a look in my terminal for the com.apple.mail defaults and didn't see anything that matches your modifications, so it should turn out pretty simple once we can see the original instructions you followed.

Artie: I'm pretty sure I did it without the quotes but I'll try it again. I don't know how to find the command I put in.

If you follow the first step of the original suggestion again, by entering

defaults read com.apple.mail UserHeaders

in Terminal and hitting Return, what is the Terminal response?

Oh brother. I never hit return until now. I wasn't sure what to do. Anyway, this is the response so, of course, it didn't work. Now what? confused

There is no (UserHeader) default for the (com.apple.mail) domain.
Defaults have not been changed.

DK:

I entered my delete command again and this time the Terminal response was:

localhost:~ ritamontague$ defaults delete com.apple.mail UserHeaders
localhost:~ ritamontague$

The top line is my command, the second line is the response. Looks like it accepted it and got ready for another command (I hope).

I read in the Apple Discussion Forum that when setting up a "read receipt" you should quit Mail, put the command into Terminal, quit Terminal, then restart Mail. So, this time I did that when I put in my "delete command." Hope that makes sense.

Last time I didn't quit anything. Maybe it worked. I'll know tomorrow when I hear from my friend whom I emailed tonight after I "fixed" it. I'll let you know.

By what I see from your terminal session, your test e-mail should show that receipts are no longer going to be an issue.

Let us know.

You are right!!! Quitting Mail and Quitting Terminal and then restarting Mail at the end of the process made all the difference. Whew!! My friend is happy again. smile
