I don't know whether these errors have anything to do with the problem I am now experiencing. I went to Network Solutions.com to research some domain names and there was a click-through for a service that alerts you when domain names become available. I tried a few names but I did not sign up. Then I opened Camino later in the day, went to NJTransit.com and got a window that said Network Solutions - this domain is available. Then I tried to print that and my printer couldn't be found because the IP had changed. Haven't been able to detect a virus. I am am using Time Warner Roadrunner with Earthlink. Last year they had an IP addressing problem. Someone else thinks it is my router. The computer is shut down and the network is disconnected and I don't know what to do.

Any help will be deeply appreciated.

p.s. Tried three different browsers, emptied all cookies, caches, history and Flash cookies. Also ran DNSChanger remover.

Hi Slo,

Your permissions repairs all look appropriate for the 10.6.3 system you have installed.......those repairs should have been done right after you installed the Java Update from Software Update. Is there any reason NOT to install all the system updates to bring your installed OS up to the latest security release of 10.6.6?

Navigating to Network Solutions and clicking through shouldn't have any effect on your IP addresses internal to your home LAN. I'll bet that the printer was assigned a new address through normal means internal to your home LAN....possibly a power cycle or reset which caused ALL of the IP addresses to be reassigned dynamically.

It sounds to me like you need to assign a fixed IP to your printer (printer server device) instead of depending on it being assigned an IP address through DHCP by the router......

What I normally do is set the range of IP addresses that the router assigns to a smaller set than the default.....most home networks only need less than 20 maximum.....and then setup my networked printers with fixed IP addresses outside that DHCP range.

For example, if the router assigns IP addresses dynamically from 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.200 by default I would narrow that down to 192.168.1.100 through 192.168.1.119 (20 assignable addresses) and then give my network printer a fixed IP address of 192.168.1.10.......in your specific situation you'll need to set addresses in the same subnet as your router assigns......so look in System Preferences at the Network PrefPane to see what IP address your computer has been assigned by the router (xxx.xxx.x.yyy) so you can set a fixed IP address for your printer in the same subnet.....in other words, you want a fixed IP address that matches the xxx.xxx.x part of the pattern, but is different from the yyy part of the pattern and NOT the same as any other IP address on your LAN.......unless you KNOW what the range of IP addresses is that your router assigns from, you won't know that the fixed IP address that you choose for your printer is OUTSIDE of that range and you may be setting up a potential network conflict.

Hope this helps.

I'm back on MY computer. Thank you for such a swift and comprehensive reply. Feeling reassured it wasn't a virus, I started up and reconnected to the network and now it works. Phew! Panic! The situation was so baffling to me (and there was always the possibility that njtransit *could* forget to renew the registration and it would expire in Jan. After all, they forget to open doors when the train stops. confused )

1) I'm running 10.6.6. These errors never go away no matter how many times I run Disk Utility. Would it be a good idea to start up from the SL DVD and repair permissions or always use the latest Disk Utility so the versions match-up. (I've been wondering about this one for awhile.) These errors don't look like a Java infection, do they?

2) The router is set up DHCP. Static IPs are a good idea. Your explanation is excellent. Will do.

3) If the problem was Earthlink's DNS, then that would explain everything except:

a) The printer popping to the .100 ending address from .102. I tried to think back whether anything I tried at the time might have done this. It seems more than a coincidence. I did try switching the network cable to a different port on the hub as a possible solution. I must have done this *before* I tried to get a print of the page. (I wasn't sure at that point whether it was even the real Network Solutions page.) Is it possible that would cause the printer to jump?

b) Network Solutions was the default parked domain page for many sites I tried. (Some sites worked.) I even created a new user and got the results. Earthlink has their own page which is what I always get when I mmissppell a domain name and I never got that. Now I am getting the Earthlink page.

4) I have wondered for some time about Time Machine and I always do an additional back up once a week onto a different drive. If the computer does get infected, is Time Machine of any use? Are all the backups questionable at that point?

I know Macs *don't* get viruses and I'm careful about the usual suspects, but Evil Doers eventually find weaknesses to exploit. (Personally, I think it is a bit of propaganda on Apple's part to compensate for a smaller market share by telling people you're a smaller target.)

5) Thank you, thank you, thank you.

In an Apple Support article that is over a year old, Apple listed numerous Disk Utility permission "errors" that could safely be ignored. It is very likely that these Java listings can also be ignored.

I say this optimistically since I see them all the time whenever I run a permissions repair.

On a Mac since 1984.
Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

I have exactly the same list of resets showing up on all the Macs at my place and Ira's answer is right on target. This issue of permissions that show up to be reset time and time again goes back to the OS X Public Beta. It will get fixed in one update only to have a different set appear in a subsequent update or release. Apple's advice has always been something on the order of Alfred E. Neuman's "What? Me worry?". In fact it has been suggested that at least in some cases Apple's "fix" has been to modify the Unix command that underlies Permission Repair in Disk Utility as well as all the various third party utilities to not report some of the "errors".

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?
