I went to the Mactopia site for an XML update and was told that a new version of Silverlight is available, about which I wondered "What the hell is that?" A bit of poking around tells me (short version) that it's a Microsoft type of Flash.

Further poking and I see that I have a Silverlight plug-in. Should I care whether I have this or not?

If you're into viewing streaming video from Silverlight sites, you'll need that plugin. From a security point of view, I’d monitor developments as with everything else that’s subject to subversion. Although MS has issued at least one security update for Silverlight (v3), there has been little evidence of serious security problems so far.

Netflix requires Silverlight. There are a handful of other sites that require it as well for video streaming, but not many (at least not many that I have encountered).

"Security through Obscurity" does tend to have that appearance.
