Cookies vs Keychain, I'm confused.

I just deleted all my cookies for a side issue I'm having.
Now it seems I have to manually log into every site again. I hate that.
Isn't this a keychain thing?

AFAIK, this depends on the browser you are using. At least some of them do not store passwords as cookies. My Firefox is set to delete cookies upon exit and it remembers all passwords. While some browsers store password information in Keychain, others do not (e.g., iCab). Hope you deleted just cookies and not something else as well.

thanks Mac,
I just switched to Firefox from Safari. Got so fed up with Safari instability after so many years.
Does Firefox do good job of remembering user name as passwords?

What add on do you use to manage this stuff/ cookies.

I just added better privacy add on to delete flash cookies upon exiting.

I don't use any add-ons except for Google Scholar search (broken in Firefox 3.6.6). Firefox uses its own password database that can be easily viewed in Preferences. And it does not load them automatically. You have to type the first letter of the username and then it appears with the password. If you like customizing browsers, I would recommend Flock or Camino (both Firefox's relatives). Both work fine. My default browser is iCab (price $25 but worth it). It has several advantages: 1. Saves files as PDF (others only do it through print menu and not always well); 2. Is very fast; 3. Is very secure; 4. Remembers passwords and loads them directly if you save them; 5. Has a lot of easily accessible agents allowing you great versatility with browser-specific pages; 6. Allows a lot of customization. Some drawbacks: it uses Keychain for passwords, so to verify them you need to go to Keychain; you must manually save passwords though view>save forms command (no shortcut); can rarely hang on a page after it is open for a while, but relaunch makes it load the same page fast; does not work flawlessly with Microsoft Web Outlook on downloads. I think these are all minor problems given that it is a one-man operation. And customer service is fast and personalized.
These days, there is a lot of browsers and most of them are pretty good.

Actually, Safari can do this. When you download a PDF and go to File > Save As, saving it as a PDF is one of the options.

I think Alex's point is the quality of iCab pdf's vs. those from other browsers, as he explained in a previous iteration of this discussion. smirk

Jon, this is news to me that Safari can save the web page as PDF. I have latest Safari and all it gives me on save as is source and web archive (I am not sure why you invoke the download). iCab does it directly. The print option works, of course, with Safari or any other browser.
Wow, Alternaut, you remember... And DK confirmed that.

If your d/l already is a PDF, why do you have to do anything further?

Macnerd, thanks
Wow, so Safari, does a better job of remembering user/pass to get you logged into a website you visit a lot? is this true and why?
I can't image going to something other than Firefox now as it's so stable, performs great, and has huge community behind it.
On PDF question, Firefox only has the print option, maybe there is a good add on? they seem to have an add on for everything.
What about web archive with Firefox? In safari, I would get a nice web archive file on the desktop. With Firefox I get that plus the folder, how annoying. and solution to that?

I did not praise Safari for remembering passwords, although it does a decent job. If you like Firefox, there is a couple of add-ons to try (you can always disable and/or uninstall them):
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/636/
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Internet-Utilities/pdfit.shtml
Disclaimer: before your hint, I did not know they existed. Did not need them anyway because of iCab...

It worked for me. The disclaimer says it is for Mac OS X. I downloaded it, double-clicked, it opened Flock and wanted to install the add-on. I canceled for lack of need.
Update: Sorry to have confused you. I tried both and the second one says it is incompatible with latest Firefox and Flock. The first one opens in Flock by default but can be installed by Firefox through "open with". However, it takes forever to "convert the page to pdf". If you really want this feature, I strongly recommend iCab. The trial is as good as the full version, just wait for 10 sec for the message to disappear. If you like it, buy, if not, just keep for this particular task.

Interesting. Guess, you have a slightly older Firefox. My 3.6.6 does not like this add-on. You might like to postpone Firefox update if it asks for it.
Glad it worked for you!

it's called pdf download, have tested it thoroughly. that said, the print pdf is not so bad?
Do you try Mac's web archive?

On my 10.5.8 this add-on takes too much time to load. One possible reason - I did not restart the computer. Concerning print to pdf: in my past experience only iCab gave a good pdf copy with format preserved and page breakdown. Other browsers did not do a good job. However, there have been many updates since that time, so they could have improved. Web archive: never liked it since I have a pdf option.

Mac, the pdf does not look like a webpage as a web archive does though.

icab: how much better is it than Firefox otherwise? Does it have great amount of add ons?

I don't think it has any. But it has a vast preferences menu and can be customized in many ways. You might like just to try it. It is actually a fairly small app (about 10 MB), very fast and very secure.
