Prior to Snow Leopard I had been using Preview in Safari to open PDFs. One of the things I liked was that it would open in the Sidebar mode, which facilitated viewing by eliminating the need to scroll.

However, Safari no longer provides the Sidebar (and I'm not even sure it's using Preview). If I open a PDF in Safari it opens in a separate Safari window without any options to choose a sidebar mode.

If I save the same PDF to the desktop and open it with Preview I get the Sidebar.

Is there a way to open PDFs in Safari and have the Sidebar function?

I've never seen Safari provide any sidebar function when viewing PDFs. At least not with Apple's default Safari/pdf viewer. Maybe you previously had some 3rd-party plugin which did that?

I see that when PDFs in Safari are opened with Adobe Reader and the PDF document itself has been formatted to support sidebar.

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?
