Does anyone know of an application like Mail Watch that is Universal? Mail Watch checks to see if there are any emails on the server and has an icon in the menu bar. This is my last PPC app that probably won't run on Snow Leopard.

Thanks

Douglas,

Sorry I don't have an answer for you per-se (that means I don't know).

But if you'll consider a work around...

As I understand things, Snow Leopard allows the (optional) installation of Rosetta. That is only about 1.9 MB in size so it won't take up much room and you'll be able to run PPC apps (including Mail Watch) like you always have.

More discussion/info on Rosetta and Snow Leopard is here.

thanks Pendragon I think that will work. Hope PPC apps work as well with SL as they are currently doing in Leopard.

Alternatively, most e-mail clients have the option to check for mail every "x minutes/hours". Leave the application running in the background and its Dock icon will show you when there are new arrivals.

On a Mac since 1984.
Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

Douglas,

Ira's point is well taken. You would do well to consider that.

Re Rosetta, just don't forget to check that option when first installing SL or you will need to reinstall that critter again.

And please, do let us know of your success (or not).

One of the reasons I like MailWatch is because I can see what mail is on the server and delete the junk I don't want before using AppleMail

If you prefer your unread mail count to appear in your menu bar rather than in your Dock you can search VersionTracker for one of the listed apps that does just that.

If you turn automatic d/l off you can do just that from within Apple Mail...

1. Click on the gear wheel at the bottom of your Sidebar.

2. Click on "Get Account Info."

3. Select the account you want to edit.

4. Delete the e-mails you don't want to d/l.

5. Now do a command-shift-N to d/l what's left.

The procedure is, admittedly, a bit cumbersome and time consuming, but, on the other hand, MailWatch's procedure may be equally or even more so.

Hope this helps.

I didn't know I could do that with AppleMail. However, the process is way more complicated and time consuming than MailWatch and AppleMail has no way to tell me that there is mail on the server without going through this procedure while the MailWatch icon in the menu bar is updated every 5 minutes.

I did learn something new about AppleMail though. Thanks for that.

As Ira pointed out, (Apple) Mail>Preferences>General>Check for new mail does precisely that as often as every minute, but it displays its unread mail count in your Dock, rather than in your menu bar.

Happy to have been able to help; hope this helps more. smile

I believe that Mail only reports the number of unread emails downloaded not the number of emails waiting on the server.

With IMAP accounts the number of unread emails on the server and the number shown in Mail are one in the same. For POP accounts your assertion is technically correct but since POP accounts in Mail download the messages from the server automatically when the server is polled the difference is nill.

Correct... My bad.

It's can be a tedious task, but have you tried searching VersionTracker for an alternative to MailWatch?

I've checked a number of different apps but none is as simple and efficient as MailWatch. I guess I'm going to have to let go at some point.

Hi - a bit late, but just joined.

You could use a dashboard widget. I have used one forever - it's called "Pop", and just shows the number of items waiting for me at my pop server. There is a newer one called MailWidget that I haven't tried yet.

You could use the trick for detaching the widget from the dashboard so it is always visible.
