Does this look legitimate to you guys? While I was online a window popped up and said I got a virus. It came under this url. Virus Detection. It mentioned Hurricane Electric which is what my ISP uses. It says it's a credit card worm called Creditcardhijacker.osx. It says I should download MacCleaner. I just want to make sure this is legit before I do anything. Thanks. Rita

IGNORE IT!
It's a scam, Rita; there ain't no such thing as a Mac virus.
Edit: It sounds like you ran the scan? If anything like this ever happens again don't even go that far.

Rita,
I got a message from the same scammer saying that my Mac was infected, except it knew that I used Time Warner and said so. I don't know how it knew that I used TW and had a Mac. I immediately quit Safari and relaunched it.
I haven't had that occur again.

I didn't run the scan. It was just a message that popped up. I was on sme iffy websites that didn't work well looking for mp3s. I've heard Macs could get viruses now so I wondered. Thanks. I will not run it. Rita IGNORE IT!

There are still no Mac viruses, but there are things called "Trojans" (some of which can actually be picked up by no more than visiting an infected website - "drive-bys" - ...no clicking on anything required), but they shouldn't don't do much more than cause you a bit of grief before you get rid of them. (They can cost you money if you're not savvy enough to realize that the real nature of your problem is NOT what the pop-up is telling you, but the pop-up, itself.)

What can I do about a Trojan? I have an app called Malwarebytes which gets rid of Adware. It saved my bacon after I'd downloaded an open source office suite which bogged down my computer. Once the adware was removed, all was well. I don't know the signs and symptoms of a trojan or how to get rid of it unless it's by some sort of software that's available. There's an app called ScamZapper that you can look into.

Thanks for mentioning Scamzapper, Artie. I forgot that I had it. I just launched it and found that there is an update, which I installed.

There's an app called ScamZapper that you can look into. I take it that ScamZapper is only for use with Safari. It apparently primarily blocks pop-up windows. Firefox with Adblock Plus would seem to cover the same bases (assuming that "block pop-up windows" options are selected). Does Safari not have the same sort of coverage?

Yeah, ScamZapper is a Safari product, but it doesn't block pop-up windows per se; it blocks only those associated with the scams in its database...those that either hold your Mac for ransom or try to get you to buy into some bogus app.
Neither Safari's "Block pop-up windows" option, the Safari AdBlock extension, nor AdBlock Plus provides similar security.

Good to know the former. I've never seen any such pop-ups (or in fact any pop-ups) with the system I'm using. Either it works to block everything objectionable and/or I've been unusually lucky.

Apparently this (or some other) security scam pop-up is occurring in a much wider context. I went to the public library and many PC-using patrons were being inundated with security pop-ups on many web pages. The library's central IT services seem to have corralled the beast(s) because the problem seems to have been dealt with effectively at this point.

Well, PCs, alone, are a much wider, not to mention much more vulnerable, context than Macs.
