Why is it that the background color of my text (in Messages) is sometimes blue, and other times it is green? I’m certain (guess) that is intended to be a visual clue of some sort, but I have yet to divine the rationale for it.

Blue means "iMessage", green means "SMS".....

That explains that, though a bit red-faced am I for not knowing such.
Still, many thanks!

And to add to the colorful situation, if you send an iMessage and it stalls or does not go at all, you can tap and hold on the message and you will be given the option to send as a text message (i.e., green).
On a Mac since 1984. Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.
