OS 10.6.8 Because my bank and gmail account advised me to use a different browser (safari 5.1.10) I thought I would use firefox 37.0.2 but I find that firefox doesn't show any across top menu, dock or anything on my desktop and the only way out is to switch off the power. I must be missing something because it is impractical not to be able to access the menu or dock. Even when I opened my servers mail and signed out, there was nowhere to go but cut the power. Help! jaybass

Installation of Firefox shouldn't affect your Finder screen at all. Something else is going on which is compromising your Mac OS.

Did you download Firefox 37.0.2 directly from mozilla.org/firefox/ ?
If not, the version you installed may have been infected by a third party (assuming that there isn't something else — such as previously installed malware or hardware/software malfunction — going on with your system).

I ran ClamXav and it found a problem with "Ad on" which I'd added to firefox the first time I used it. The file was despatched to the quarantine folder. I trashed firefox and downloaded 37.0.2 again but the same problem exists. I tried to find prefs for firefox before opening it but I don't where to look, assuming they would help me. BTW, I downloaded this version from mozilla. I will run ClamXav again but to cover everything this time. jaybass

You might want to check your version of java. that's usually restricted by older versions of OS, and web sites like that tend to use javascript. Outdated java could cause all sorts of problems. You may not be able to update it any further than it is, due to the age of your OS. (that may be the final straw that forces you to update your os)

Firefox prefs can be found in Library > Preferences.
If you haven't set Library to be visible, go to Finder bar, choose Go for dropdown menu while pressing option.

Firefox 37.0.2 works just fine in my OS X 10.6.8 installation.

Doesn't command-Q quit it in yours?

(So far, the only "Update you browser" pop-ups I've seen have come from members of the Tribune group of newspapers...the L.A. Times and the Sun-Sentinel.)

Sounds to me as if you may be operating in full-screen mode. See if this Mozilla support article is any help.

By George, I think you've got it!

I just tried Full Screen mode (accessed under View) — never tried it before — and got exactly that.
To enter or exit, use ^⌘F (shift-command-F).

Finally with the info from Dkmarsh, I now have a browser page plus the dock and menus. Thanks to all who answered my dilemma.
I did find that in full screen mode you can exit by taking the mouse to the top of the screen where the delete button appears.
While I'm here, there 6 recommended "Add-ons"...does anyone know if I should select any or all of them? Below these are 3 recommended apps...any suggestions there? I should mention that in my desperation I trashed 2 java folders one from my home folder and the other from the HD library. I understand that with the kind of uses I have, I really don't need them??? jaybass

What Add-ons? What apps? Please list by name and version.

Firefox just updated today (to version 38.0).

Open firefox, click add-ons at the bottom, and you will see them. I have auto updates so I guess I will be notified soon. jaybass

Add-ons and Apps are what one chooses selectively in Firefox:
Go to Tools and select Add-ons and/or Apps; go to Get Add-ons and pick out what you want.
If your Add-ons and Apps are already populated by Firefox, then they're defaults with Firefox.
My selections are not likely going to be yours. So when I update, all my Add-ons and Apps are carried over to the new version. Therefore I would have no idea what comes with a "virgin" download of Firefox.
