On ranker.com, Firefox often gets frozen with this error message:

Warning: Unresponsive script

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: chrome://browser/content/browser.js:16766

Over the years I've had that happen on a number of sites and the script rarely completes. Often, just by stopping it, the page opens.

More likely in this instance it's the fault of the newer versions of Firefox. Here's my response to slolerner from earlier:

If you check out "What's New" (ie, release notes) in Firefox versions 29-30, you'll note a number of unresolved problems relating to Mac OS X at the bottom of the list. That's one of the reasons I haven't bothered to update my Firefox 28.

I haven't seen it in a while, but anyway I'm still satisfied with 31.

See what happens if you stop the script when Firefox gives you the option. My experience on other sites which bug Firefox that way is that nothing significant happens.

I've never been able to stop scripts on this site or even get the choice.

I enter the site, it starts loading, then Firefox freezes, then after a while I get the error message window indicating the script problem. I've never been able to choose any options in the window because Firefox is frozen. I have to force quit every time.

The script nearly always references "chrome." Maybe always.

"Chrome" is just the "overcoat" your offending website's wearing and, due to potentially poor design/content, is probably the cause of the problem you've been experiencing.

You might like to check out: Browser and GUI Chrome

Summary: 'Chrome' is the user interface overhead that surrounds user data and web page content. Although chrome obesity can eat half of the available pixels, a reasonable amount enhances usability.

Safari 4.0.4 choked on it. So did icab 5.2. But, after a slow start (I left the room and waited), Opera 24 got the site to work. Go figure. I haven't tried that browser in years. Had to download the latest.

I don't know if you're using the NoScript extension for Firefox, but if you don't you could give it a shot. Blocking the script on your problem website(s) before it runs might just bypass your current issue.

On a related note, if you intend to keep on using it, you might want to update your copy of Firefox to Version 32.0.3, which fixes a critical security issue (RSA Signature Forgery in NSS).

Thanks for the heads up.

I did try a script blocking extension that was recommended on the Firefox support page. But it affected the site too much, blocked too much of its usability, so there was no point. Surprisingly, Opera 24 is still getting the job done w/out a stutter.
