Mac OS X 10.8.4

Email problems:

I have an older MacBookPro 10.5.8 with my email history on the machine.

I recently purchased an iMac 10.8.4 - I am receiving conflicting advice (?) as to how to transfer the history, folders and contents from the MacBookPro to the later OS. A suggestion was to use Stuffit (now that was from left field!)

Any advice is appreciated.

I'm not sure if you are asking about e-mail folders only or everything from the old MacBook., but if the latter, Migration Assistant (in your Utilities Folder) is the most effective method. It does require that your two Macs be connected in some way (there are multiple options). Start the Assistant and it will walk you through the process.

Forget Stuffit. That's a compression utility. Does it even run on 10.x?

Now if you are only asking about transferring Mail folders, etc. there is an option in Mail: File>Import Mailboxes... . What I can't tell you is where to find the Apple Mail mailboxes since I don't use it as my primary e-mail client and I find numerous folders labeled "Mail" scattered throughout my User Library and Application Support folder. Perhaps someone can provide a more specific location. Of course, once this is determined this folder on your MacBook would need to be placed on the iMac. A USB flash drive can assist with this part.

On a Mac since 1984.
Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

Having used it many times on a wide variety of Macs and OS versions, I concur with Ira L that Migration Assistant is the way to go. If you haven't setup your new MacBook yet you will be prompted to transfer your data early in the setup process and this will transfer everything including your entire user account and its associated files such as Mail. If you have already setup your new MacBook you can still run Migration Assistant manually. For full instructions For more information on using Migration Assistant see Knowledge Base article HT4889.

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

The Migration Assistant worked a treat while I am ironing out those small problems as I come across them.

Thanks again,

Rob
