Satellite and bandwidth

I recently got Satellite internet (that's all we can get except for dialup). We don't do gaming or anything but.....we recently got an email from Starband stating that we exceeded the 7 day rolling bandwidth limit and have been slowed down to 100 kbps until our 7 day rolling bandwidth drops from 1.1 gigs to 750 mbs. Our threshold limit is 1.0 gigs.

My husband was watching a lot of online TV episodes. Could that be what messed us up? Is there a way to do that without using a lot of bandwidth? A trick or something?

Thanks.

Rita

I don't know about Starband, but HughesNet had a "free time" from 2-6 AM eastern, where downloads didn't count towards your limit. You might check with Starband to see if they have something similar. If they do, download the episodes during that time.

Hi Jer:

Yes, Starband has free time from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. Of course they don't say which time zone that's for. I will have to ask. And, again, it's in the wee hours. I'm asleep.

Thanks for your info.

unless you were torrenting or something, I very much doubt your computer traffic had anything to do with it. It's actually kinda hard to suck down data beyond a certain speed, usually limited by the bandwidth the other end is willing to cut you a slice of. (akami etc throttle, obviously)

So P2P is about the only way to get more than a meg a second your way at a time. (due to multiple sources)

Not sure I understood all that smile but the most bandwidth was used when my husband watched a bunch of Dr. Who episodes. We are only allowed 1 gig of downloads a week. We went over that because of Dr. Who. I was able to get the restriction removed (one time thing by Starband) but now I don't know how to keep track with the bandwidth monitor as my overage is still on there. The Starband tech guy was too techy for me to understand most of what he said. I guess I will just restrict all downloading except email until that 600+ mb falls off the radar in a few days.
