I have used QuickTime Player 10 for a few years. It's now at version 10.2 on my machine that runs on OS X 10.8.5. I go to the Apple Store and search QuickTime and they are touting version 7. Is version 10 an abandoned idea?

My understanding, which may be flawed, is that there are two separate, distinct QuickTimes: QuickTime 7, which is the older QuickTime and is used to play old QuickTime movies, and QuickTime X, which is a modern, Web-standards and new-codec player that's used to handle things like H.264 files. You can have both on new versions of OS X (10.6 or later); 10.5 and before are limited to QuickTime 7 but can't use QuickTime X.

Tacit is correct. QT 7 and QT X (or 10) can coexist, and handle different movie types (with QT 7 featuring older codecs missing from QT X), which is why you may want them both. Another reason for that is that QT 7 can have the Pro upgrade installed, which is not available with QT X. The latter incorporates several, but not all, of the QT 7 Pro goodies.

the new quicktime also lacks some of the editing/exporting features of the older quicktime when licensed in "pro" mode. I keep QTP7 around for that reason. It makes a very handy Q&D video (and audio) editor.

I believe that 7's pro features were automatically activated for everyone after a (not so recent?) software update?

That may have been wishful thinking... AFAIK, Apple still requires you to purchase a QT Pro license in the Apple Store.
